it's been a while since i posted this.. i'm sure there has been some new PnS model introduced. So right now is the F11 still good in terms of low noise at full res high ISO?

Newbie here. Planning to get something to replace my good old S45.

Is it that important a factor when purchasing a P&S, you want a one tat can have the highest ISO with the lowest noise? Strange. Only a few P&S got up to ISO 1600...
From Pentax to 4/3, back to Pentax and then back to M4/3 !?!?

Finepix F11 should be your choice.
The CCD is 1/1.7" size, which is very big for only 6mp.
That explains the superb low-noise performance at high ISO.
While at ISO800, things are still looking good, I wouldn't use it for ISO1600 though.

after using the S45 for a few years, i realised the main weakness of compact PnS is their very weak ability to capture accurate colour at low lightings. I tried cameras with IS but found out it's not really useful if your subject is also moving.

That explains my criteria for my next camera. Can up the ISO, turn off the flash and fire off to capture.

Actually, all cameras are P&S if you change to Auto mode.

Presently, I believe the digital compact with the lowest noise level is Fuji F11 ba..

The original poster (obewan) is saying that all cameras are PnS if you put on auto mode. Your reply is that D200 does not have auto mode (true), but I'm saying that for D200 to function as PnS, you simply need to put it to P; as in there is little conscious decision making on the part of the photographer.

P mode is still not for idiots as green mode. Green mode will pop the flash up for you when it's too dark. P doesn't do that. The green mode of the D50 is the best. Auto WB, auto ISO, auto shutter speed, auto aperture, auto flash... what else?

okok... p mode is for semi idiots... anyway, don't want to hijack the thread anymore.

For what it's worth, I feel that Fuji DCs are the best in terms of high ISO/low noise.. few DCs from other manufacturers match the lowlight capability of Fuji DCs.
