Question Tell me about 707

Hello everyone,

I am new to this place, and new to photography too, so can you guys enlighten me on a couple of things?

What are the common/necessary accessories one would need?

Do I need to get official Sony accessories?

Lastly, is there something I can do about increasing the shutter reponsiveness? There is a slight delay upon depressing the button fully. Does that mean that I cannot take pictures instantaneously? Or is it a phenomenon present in only my digital camera?

Thanks a bunch, and I hope to learn a lot from here!

Extra Memory Stick 128MB, Extra Batteries, Flash, Tripod.. (Buy only what you need, not what you want)

It depends and not neccessary. For Sony F707, if you need accessories like the flash, you can only use the Sony F1000 as 707 does not has a hotshoe. Other cheaper brands are available for Memory Stick(Hagiwara or IO Data) and even the FM50 battery.

I don't really understand your question, but I will try to answer you.

- The shutter button when half pressed, it's for AE/AF Lock, to autofocus (Autofocus Mode), that's the slight delay that you mentioned
- then compose/recompose your shot
- fully press down the button to release the shutter.
The above steps happen in split second when taking shots, you just have to get used to it.

Hope I did answer your questions.

Thanks for the info.

So does this mean that if I need a flash, I would HAVE to get the one from Sony? What about filters?

BTW, what kind of lenses can I use for my camera?

With regards to the Memory Sticks, are the non-Sony brand MSs reliable?

The delay I was referring to was the lag between completely depressing the button and the camera actually releasing the shutter. There is a noticable pause, hence I had a couple of missed action shots.

If you need a flash, you need to get the Sony F1000 for Sony F707, but you do not need to get it from Sony outlet, you can easily get it at a cheaper price from CP or AP. As for filters, there are many other brands available as well, to name a few common ones are Hoya, Cokin, Lee.. etc, it's not worth paying 100 over dollars to get Sony's filter just to feel better when seeing the brand printed on it.

Other brands of memory stick are as reliable as Sony's, and how do you justify reliability with brands. Do a Sony Memory Stick makes you feel more reliable? Spending more money on a product does not make a product more reliable. Doesn't make sense to me.

For lenses, you can use any brand of wide angle conversion and tele conversion lenses which have a 58mm thread size or with added step up ring.

For the lag, I guess you are talking about the processing time, the time when the camera process the image into the media. And yes, I do feel that it's kinda slow, no choice as already been using this camera for quite a while. Either you live with it, or change another camera. You just have to be ready when taking shots.

Ok thanks a lot for the info. By the way, have you used the Sony flash before? How about a lens hood? Would one be necessary? Any tripods to recommend, as I enjoy taking night shots.

Try the Slik U6600 or U9000. Cathay carries them. The sony flash is just a auto flash, nothing special. If you only want a cheap(er) flash than the sony flash and don't anticipate taking many shots with other photographers using flash, you might want to consider a slave flash. Example:
Vivitar 285HV, the Metz one...

With regards to the lens hood, only get one if you get lens flare. Otherwise, not necessary.

The lag while depressing the shutter is the time taken for the cam to focus and the shutter lag. Try depressing the shutter half way for it to focous first, then pressing it further down when you actually want the picture to be taken.
