99% of the time larger filter size = larger glass elements.

can u name an example which supports ur assumption?

sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM - 77mm filter size
    nikkor AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX ED - 58mm filter size
    nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D - 58mm filter size

so does that sigma lens have a larger glass element?

Generally it does. Few lens makers want to have large lens diameter for lenses as it adds to the cost of users buying large filters. Large filters cost more $$$. That said, many manufacturers try to keep the diameter consistent to allow intercahngeable filters on different lenses.

    1. No relation. Lens quality depends on Elements within and optimizations... but in the market, most big appeture lenses are very precisely optimized to produce good result.

    2. True, so here is where all the special element comes in... Ultra Low Depression Element, Aspherical Element, ED element, Floride Crystal etc etc etc... and so goes the cost bla ba bla bla bla...
