    I agree.

I've also noticed that there are a lot of wannabes out there, simply because DSLRs are now so cheap and readily available. Well, in a way, I guess I'm a wannabe as well. But man, I daren't even call myself a "photographer".

What amuses me though, is that there is a tendency to spill out dictionary definitions. To me, they don't prove anything. Dictionary definitions are one thing, but real world definitions are just a little less distinct.

Just saw this, can't help but to agree with deadpoet. Dat why I dun name myself photographer, always say I am a shooter or enthusiast, although now wedding gigs are my main income.

But I think if you make a living out of photographing, then you can be consider a pro, but how good your photos are, thats another thing.

Also, I can't go sell my service as an amatuer, right? So infront of my potential customer, I'll normally say I shoot weddings professionally...he he

You are PRO! I think he is referring to someone else

I am a newbie who is using a D70, planning to get a D200 much later this year, but I would never dream of calling myself a PRO

With the DSLR being so "affordable" and convenient in our time, I guess there will be more & more novices like myself who will be buying a D70s, 350D or what not .... I think the majority of entry level DSLR users will not call themselves PRO. Maybe only a few who are very confident of their skills, and who are no longer shooting purely as a hobby, but as a mean of earning a living, will call themselves PRO ...

So how? Let them be lor No need to get so worked up ... Relax, enjoy your shoots. As the saying goes, "A picture is worth more than a 1000 words". Let the pictures of the self-proclaimed PROfessionals speak for themselves.

    Cheers!

if one picture is OOF, then it is a mistake
if the whole series are OOF then it must be ART

And if dictionary definitions don't prove anything, we should all use Singlish? Having learnt the wrong words or wrong usage of words, we should remain proud? I have never been good in my English, did at best B3, more likely below that, but I do respect a language that has been around for quite a few centuries and is now the 'standard' around the world. Knowing the correct meaning of words ensure that I communicate correctly.

And if it helps, 'professional' and 'amateur' dictionary definitions certainly defines the ground on which this discussion should be based on. Any respectable debate will start with proper definitions, else we are all arguing over different things.

From what I gathered, Deadpoet refers to the 'pros' as those who owns expensive gear, has no formal training, tries to make some money and advertises themselves as 'professionals'. Real professionals are those who does make a living out of photography (equipment, skills and talent not required). And it is actually quite wrong to call an 'amateur' lousy, many amateurs are actually much better than pros (think outside photography, there are amateur RC plane guys, HAM radio guys, meteorologists, and car modifiers who do much better than their professional counterparts).

just sharing a thought. What's wrong with calling oneself a "professional"? (not that i'm calling myself one) How about "God's gift to women/men"? "Singapore best nasi lamak"? I mean to me it's just claims (stick and stones....) To me at the end of the day if you can deliver that matters.
