    Hi guys,

Just dropped by again to see what has been going on.

    Thinking about it yet again.

I have just added another camera to my collection. Wow, Pro ....
    you have to be kidding.

I actually like ALL of them for their own differences.

I will actually go further and say, "I also went and spent a truck load of money on studio gear and a new computer today.

Wow a Pro .... Ahhhh get real !!!

No !!! I presently get paid from where I work; I don't have any dependants, I have a bit of money to spend on what I like.

    I happen to LIKE photography.

If a friend or other comes around to my place at present, they might say, "Wow, do you do professional photography ?".

My answer.... " I do photography, I want to learn and become good at different aspects of photography"

But MOST OF ALL, I don't want to take photo's that friends at CS think is great.
    I want to take photo's that " I " think is great.

    Cheers
Time, is an effortless construction :)

Give the person a break lah, if the person knows how to make money out of photography and knows how to promote himself/herself... I would say good marketing skills.

This is just a normal as time goes by with the coming of convergence age. Look around us and we can see that there are MASSIVE resources in regards to photography. SO one might just bought a pro cam, take some reading follow by a few shots and claim to be just as good as those in studio.

Keep in mind we are living in "instant noodle" age, consumer on the average are very easy to be pleased. This is not lmiit to photography, look at printing services, IT as a general etc. For e.g a young bright man who just read up an article on assembling pc and he claim to be a professional IT support technician. What can be said about him?

The only way is that consumer need to be smarter and learn the truth from the pool of lies. And from what I see, this is an increasing trend.

that is the ideal situation. consumer education and awareness on a local scale large enough to motivate progress.

unfortunately the situation has always been like this - there WILL be groups of people who 'choose' to be 'ignorant' in favour of frills like convenience and of course, budget.

when there is demand, there will be supply. when there is demand, there will be supply. vicious endless cycle

Might be a little late to say this, but there are some photo competitions on the internet that specifically categorize competitors according to whether they are amateurs or professionals. Their definition of professional is usually something along the lines of, "A person who makes the majority of their income from photography."

That is itself a very loose definition. Assuming people get very little pocket money, have no job, but their occasional photoshoot gets them the bulk of their spending money, then are they indeed 'professionals'?

A common abbreviation of the word 'professional' is not surprisingly, 'pro'. But does this mean that a person who makes money from photography is really a 'pro'? Maybe. Or perhaps they got lucky, clicked the button on a great shot and earned a grand prize at a competition. From then on, it's seemingly a one-hit wonder. Such a photographer may never produce quality works again.

Perhaps we should let people call themselves whatever they like. If it works for them, then all the better. But if it doesn't, they'll probably find another naming term soon.

Anyway, I'd call myself a serious amateur, a person who's still very much in the process of learning, does not make money out of photography, but is keen to improve and someday get a prize at a competition. The prefix 'serious' simply means that I'm usually mad enough to go to a faraway place all by myself and take photos for hours on end. It may also mean that I'll be crazy enough to get up at an hour when others are sleeping, just for photography. And it also means that I'd blow off a significant amount of my savings to get an additional accessory if I deem it necessary to get the shots I am after.

In one of the books I read, it was humorously mentioned that all photographers must have been very bad people in the past, for they are now cursed with the constant urge to capture the world through their camera, when others are happy admiring the scenery, or on some occaions, happily snug in bed, warm and cozy.

    Just something to think about.
