Default HELP - Damaged Negatives

Sorry if this has been asked before, but getting desperate....

I've just started scanning in my old negatives and found many to be 'damaged' as in starting to get fungus. Some questions, please:

- How to clean / restore negatives?
- How to store negatives?

I thought I was being good and getting sleeves to store my negatives, but no good. What I have also found is that the negative holders that I've been using that I bought in Canada many years ago with now 15 year old negatives seem to be OK; they are the type that go into a 3 ring-binder and load from the side (they way that the photo-processors cheap ones). But the ones that are top-loading seem to get damages; probably more exposed to the environment.

Don't know if the sleeves I have are acid-free or whatever that I have been reading on the other threads.

Noticed that some of my favourite pictures from yesteryear are damaged. An example:

Please HELP.

Thanks.

I also have many rolls of films with dust and dirt stuck to it. After scanning also has the characteristic yellow blotches like yours. Any way to remove those sticky dirt by washing? Any fluid to use?

well, washing under running water would help, and then drying in a drying cabinet....

although proper storage/archival sleeves are always the best way. how come dust will get into the sleeve anyway?

if you thinking of scanning digitally and if the negatives are scratched/dust that cannot be removed, get a Coolscan and make use of the digital ICE feature that removes dust and scratches.... for a handsome price of course...
