I recently met one professional graphics person as well, with a very similar attitude. He was going on and on about how digital is much better than film in terms of resolution and tonal range, and how 2 years ago he was already playing with Hasselblad 22-megapixel cameras in his workplace. And the best part was how he said SLRs are just toys that they use for PR events, for anything else they'd be using at least med format.

This is the same person who told me home-burnt DVD-Rs have a lifespan of 100 years as compared to 3-4 years for CD-Rs, and that the reason my home burnt DVD-Rs didn't last long was because I used cheap Taiyo Yuden dye DVD-Rs.

Makes me wonder what the professional industry gets to play with daily.

Taiyo Yuden dyes cheap? Dis definitely had me luffin'.

Medium format, Hassy, 35mm. If the chap doesn't know what the hell he's shooting, he can be shooting LF and his shots will be still crap.

And it makes me wonder, since when a silicon wafer won silver hydride crystals? Both are 2 different stuff that processes light in different methods.

Wedding photography is also work what.

Even shooting passport photos is nothing to be shamed of.

Some people just have to look and sound bigger because of their inferiority complex.

I'm not sure, as he already said he don't shoot wedding, let him say whatever he want to say lor...

and now, I just wondering, how would I react if some one ask me this:

hello, you are photographer har, all my friends say you very good in taking photos of people, pictures all very nice one, you free or not? can come and take passport photos for me?

Believe it or not, that's what my office people did last time. I was asked to take passport photos of office people for a staff card, with full equipment, minus strobes.

eheh.. this one easy lar.. i think most of us have a "chu ma" rate, once step out for a shoot only got a minimum, no matter how long (or short) the shoot takes.

so i will charge my "chu ma" rate lor... which is DEFINITELY not worth it for a passport photo.

No, no, no, pay me my minium rate, difinitely worth it, and I don't mind doing it.

The shot can blow up to 1620, can use it to put infront of lorry, but not sure how to tell them nicely.

I know of a few photographers who don't shoot weddings and events too, but when i ask them why, most of them will tell me something similar, like "trying to stay focus in what they do best" or they know they are not as good as those full-time/professional wedding/PR photographers...
Don't understand why he has to resort to "showing off" his digital back, which could be non-existance too...
Wedding and PR photography are an area of specialisation in photography too...
    Sigh...

Whenever people want to hao-lian about their camera equipment (be it what they have now, or what they have at home), I will keep quiet and siam far-far away.

Got one time, I shoot some wedding event. Got 2 other photographers, can't remember what camera they used. Probably distracted by all the camera-brand logos stickers and patches he stuck ALL over his gear. Body, lens, flash, bag - you name it. Scared people don't know, I think. So they were talking about gear, then they look at mine. And one of them said, "your camera strap very nice" (it was just a simple black neoprene strap - not OpTech).

I just said thank-you, and that was that.

(similar case of hao-lian "photographer" I encountered here. )

Well, i gotta say, while doing weddings sure isn't as glamarous as working for National Geographic, the pay from weddings is much better and it isn't half as tough as tramping through the jungles of Kenya and being eaten alive by bugs. Don't know about others but I prefer easy money.

Also strikes me as being weird that people would want the most expensive gear they can get their hands on to do a commercial shoot. To me it seems the best thing to do as a pro would be to get the job done with the cheapest equipment to get the highest profit margin. But then again, I guess whatever floats your boat.

Well, I guess its the ego thing. Abt how some ppl show off their expensive gears (and weep when they get robbed?) and put on an air of 'professionalism' and 'royalty'?

I think its this same snobbish attitude that u guyz encountered.

Just to share my experience during a wedding shoot, I've got people saying "Wow! You have an awesome camera, you must be very professional."

Anyway, I prefer to call myself event photographer. Weddings are special events, so are every other events a photographer have to cover.

I thought this kind of comments only happens in the old days.
I use to shoot weddings with 3 cameras, 2 SLR and 1 MF than people always say that.
Even have assistant carrying stuff for me (normally some friends of the bride or groom).
Normally I just smile but never tell them that I shoot for free.
