Turkey through my little P&S...

These were taken a few years back. No cropping, no flash and no tripod for all the shots. Camera was a Coolpix 4300. It's for sale @ $200.

This is an underground water cistern and the place was absolutely pitch black. You can see the water in the center.

My wife and I had just finished a slow, late dinner. We decided to take a walk at the lake. I believed it was around 9:30pm and it was very dark.

We decided to take a catamaran instead of the usual coach. Before the ship sailed, there was nothing much to do but wait. Out came the camera. Snap, and it was back in the bag. Did not want to disturb the passengers who paid to sit near the windows.

Can't remember this scene, but I believe we were climbing on a hill to see some mausoleum. On the way down, I noticed the lighting and took the shot.

This is one photo that I really liked. We were in the hot air balloon enjoying the break of dawn. The holes you see are houses.

Inside one of the churches deep in the cave. The ancient christians held meetings in places such as these to avoid persecution. They used egg shells to decorate the church's roof and walls. Lighting was bad (it's a cave!)...

Nothing special except that we had to pass this gate everytime we needed to walk from the little hotel to the mall across the tram tracks.

The temperature was -2 degrees Celsius on the mountain and we were certainly not dressed for it. My hands were so cold I only took a few shots and back went my hands into my pockets. This was the eastern side of the country and travellers are not recommended to go there.

Ah... Turkiye... Wonderful memories.. Was there in May '02.. Our guide was Burak (sp?), he spoke English, Italian, Spanish, French, German etc...
We were supposed to take the hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia at 5am, but it rained out.. Did you go Bodrum castle?

Nice country to visit, recomm it for everyone..
And everyone should try the treats along Taksim square, the 5000 shops at the Grand Bazaar, the hammams etc...
And of course, TURKISH DELIGHTS!!

Did not use any guide except when going east because of the war. Anyway, my wife and I backpacked for almost a month. Turkey is truly fantastic.

Not really difficult to get around. I used the a few traveller guides borrowed from the library. Lucky for me, my wife was the planner for the whole thing. I was the navigator: Frommers, Lonely Planet, etc. The difficult part is travelling to the east which is really nice. You can see Lake Van, Mount Nemrut and eat ice cream that does not melt even at 30 degress Centrigrade! You see the ancient caravan sites, also. These places are not in the normal tours.

You will most probably need a guide if you go east. I booked one and a car and the person was extremely nice. Most tours will not go further east because of the Kurdish issue. We tried to even go to Syria via Turkey, but found out that we needed to have our visas via Ankara. No point trekking back to the capital and back again to the border.
