I had set my D-Lux 2 to RAW as I wanted to see the differences between the use of it in RAW and jpeg modes. In RAW mode, the camera records the image in both RAW and jpeg format making it easy to carry out a side-by-side comparison. The RAW images was converted to jpeg in PS CS2.
These are 2 100% crop of 2 images in both RAW and jpeg formats. Both were shot at ISO 100. Comparison #1 ![]() The RAW version showed more details. Check out the texture of the concrete planter at the top left, the walkway at the bottom right corner, and the grass. The jpeg version has more noise reduction resulting in a smoother image but at the expense of a lot of details in these areas. The grass especially looked smeared in the jpeg verson. Comparison #2 ![]() The RAW version showed less colour noise than the jpeg version especially in the darker areas eg. the dark coloured fur showed clearly visible red/green colour artifacts in the jpeg version and almost none in the RAW version of the crop. The moral of this post? Shoot in RAW for better quality images? ![]()
