Some shots that I have taken with NPS on a outing to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve... I would have hope that I have sufficient warning before the whimbrels took flight such that I can switch to a slightly higher shutter speed but unfortunately that's not quite the case. Comments welcome...

your panning shots are blur leh due to slow shutter... or were you trying to convey the motion?
dun take it wrong... I just think pans shd be nice and sharp with the motion blur only in the backdrop... so for me I wd have to burn a lot of film to get it... ![]()

It's okay... I too would have prefer to have just a little higher shutter speed in this case. It's just that I wasn't preparing then to shoot in flight shots. It may be a little too extreme in this case (meaning mine was probably a little over the limits), but panning shot can still work with a slight blur on part of the subjects to convey a sense of motion..
As for your comments that digicams are better, I probably wouldn't want to start another flame war with film versas digital.. Just like to mentioned that each has it's merits and under certain situation, there might be one which has a slight advantage over the other. I've not gone into digital myself and should therefore refrained from making too much statements without ground. But I would supposed that with the exception of DSLR, a normal digital compact digital camera wouldn't probably be able to capture something similar under the same situation as the birds are long distance away and taken with the focus range of about 400mm. Well, then again, I might be wrong and there might possibly be compact digital with that range! Enuff said.. Hope I don't get any flaming for this.. ![]() KS

hehe I think this forum is more modest nowadays to flame...
I had the oly 2100 with 380mm.. so I suppose even with MF I cannot focus fast enough.. but that's a plowsumer cam.. ![]() of course my main point was that if u could continuously shoot about 40 (to exaggerate the capacity) shots maybe the chance of a really nice one wd be much higher LOL.. so in this case digital wins I guess.. you wdn't burn like 36 slides on a slow shutter panning? but a digi user might LOL.. haha a bit meandering liao... but I realised the 1st pan shot the lower right pair of birds VERY nice...

Hi..
Errrmmmm.... As a matter of fact, if you are saving a raw file at the maximum possible resolution (not necessary talking about your camera here), then there's a possibility of the camera 'stopping' after a few frame in the middle of the action to store the image... Then again, the film camera might be caught in the middle of the action when the roll finishes... Anyway in my case, I was shooting in continous mode for about 3-5 shoots (that's just how short the duration of the action was) for these couple of shots. As a matter of fact, if you are serious enough into wanting a shot, you really wouldn't think twice about burning through 36 frames on high speed continous mode to capture some action that you most probably might not encountered (at least not in the same condition) again.. Well, at least I wouldn't mind doing that... KS

Agreed! Have absolutely no intention of starting any flame wars...
It's my first time shooting birds out in the field (as opposed to captive birds around JBP) and given the lack of birds that day and the distance at which they are at, I guess I haven't really got much shots.. But have got quite a number of flowers and macro shots the following day at BG that I'm still in the process of scanning in... I'll put them up later when they're done.. ![]() KS
