IF you would like to go into DVD storage, it is better to go with DVD+R/+RW instead of DVD-R/-RW. The +R/+RW is a later and more superior technology supported by more companies. DVD-R/-RW is mainly by Pioneer. Forget about DVD-RAM. Anything else you like to know? ![]() |

I'm using the Ricoh MP5125. All other DVD+R/+RW from other brands are basically just OEM version from Ricoh. About the price... hmm... around 500+/- I think? Cannot remember, need to go back and check the receipt.
You can get more info about the Ricoh MP5125 and DVD+R/+RW technology here: http://www.ricoh.co.jp/dvd/asia/index.html For comparison between DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW technology, see: http://www.dvdplusrw.org/pc/pccomparison.html Have fun! ![]() Last edited by ziploc; 7th November 2002 at 01:51 PM. |

One DVD to find them. One DVD to bring them all. Is that simple. No need to keep so many CD-R/RW. |

I was about to purchase a DVD+/-RW drive for backup, and almost did it last weekend. For some reason I decided to wait another year or so. Why? There are so many formats (DVD-R / DVD+R / DVD-RW / DVD+RW / DVD-RAM / DVD+RAM etc), and the drive densities are quite different too. Also the drive prices are so high ($500+++) for a decent drive. I'm still worried that a $500++ drive might become obsolete next year if one standard is dropped, or if the 40/50GB DVD drives (specs already standardized) become a reality soon.
So... methinks I will get another 80GB HDD and simply mirror my drives. Much cheaper and faster too. Till then, my trusty (and cheap) CD-RW keeps going... 2+ years now. |

DVD+RW is an erasable format based on CD-RW technology. It became available in late 2001. DVD+RW is supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha, and others. It is not supported by the DVD Forum (even though most of the DVD+RW companies are members), but the Forum has no power to set standards. DVD+RW drives read DVD-ROMs and CDs, and usually read DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs, but do not read or write DVD-RAM discs. DVD+RW drives also write CD-Rs and CD-RWs. DVD+RW discs, which hold 4.7 billion bytes per side, are readable in many existing DVD-Video players and DVD-ROM drives. (They run into the same reflectivity and disc format recognition problems as DVD-RW.) DVD-RW DVD-RW (formerly DVD-R/W and also briefly known as DVD-ER) is a phase-change erasable format. Developed by Pioneer based on DVD-R, using similar track pitch, mark length, and rotation control, DVD-RW is playable in many DVD drives and players. (Some drives and players are confused by DVD-RW media's lower reflectivity into thinking it's a dual-layer disc. In other cases the drive or player doesn't recognize the disc format code and doesn't even try to read the disc. Simple firmware upgrades can solve both problems.) DVD-RW uses groove recording with address info on land areas for synchronization at write time (land data is ignored during reading). Capacity is 4.7 billion bytes. DVD-RW discs can be rewritten about 1,000 times. Final is the same. No differenced. Just the Copyright name of Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha for DVD+RW DVD-RW Developed by Pioneer. |
