the place is i love is the peranakan district shophouses. i like the whole idea of discovering my heritage which i discovered more clearly on my last visit by speaking with the neighbours.

which do you consider the old district?

my favourite spot very superficially is the shopping center cause thats where the family gathers.

Jonker Walk, Lorong Hang Jebat, would be a good place to begin.Walk northwards and explore..

i will suggest places like the perhentian islands, redang or tioman on the east coast of penisula malaysia. if any further into thailand, try taking a train to those island clusters at krabi, phuket etc.

btw... the place from the xtrekkers link is one lovely & laidback place to visit. got a french colonial feel within the whole town and since its a unesco site, there's no macdonalds or stuff like that.

Mint, I just went on Sunday to a super last minute unplanned trip from Batam all the way thru Pulau Tonton, Pulau Nipah, Pulau Setoko, Pulau Rempang and Pulau Galang.
Didn't stop at every island though.

Not for photography though, but took the chance to shoot along the way.

    Took a pre-chartered minivan....

The views from the suspension bridge linking Batam to Tonton area absolutely amazing!!!
And yes the driver stopped RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BRIDGE!!!
The bridge has many local people enjoying the views..... Some roadside stalls can be seen by and near the bridge.

If only someone has contacts in Batam - Galang Bahru island chain that would be willing to drive us around.

Some of my pics are here. Would upload more.... Took tons of shots. Main aim was going to a former Vietnamese refugee camp in Galang.

There is only one road linking the islands together.

The road can be considered a 'highway' of sorts.
By the road are tracks leading to plantations, swamps and small kampongs.

    Cool Re: where where where!!!

Try Pulau Sejehat, you might like it there. Dunno if the army allows anyone on there though...

nearby defined as relatively cheap to get to.

egs. phuket, bali, batam, bangkok etc etc.

and anyone interested in going with 2 18+year olds newbies (one guy, one girl). =)
haha. holiday holiday! either in march first week or any weekends from friday night to sunday night that kind.

that or anytime with me only. ehem. no tikos and chee ko peks. nonono.
if your thinking of scenic place, i would suggest brastagi or lake toba. trust me it's worth the money taking a trip up to brastagi for your scenic view
