if you are going to take sports, the HSM and the AFS80-200 or AFS70-200VR would be your weapon of choice for this range. The HSM has the slight edge against the AFD, but not on the image quality. Value for money and speed wise, you should be looking at the 70-200 HSM. Also get yourself the AFS300/2.8 to complement the range. and the D2h for faster focussing and more mem cards and better monopod and.........

Me!
Had a HSM before I changed to the AFS80-200. AF speed wise, I cant really tell the difference, but the AFS`s image quality had me kicking myself in the ass if my pics didnt come out well.

Owned both lenses and prefer the Sigma 70-200 over the 80-200 AF-D. (Note that it is the D and not S version) I think the threadstarter meant the AF-D rather than the AF-S, right??
If you want to compare HSM to AF-S....errr.... I think the AF-S win hands down... |

Both can get cheaper in the BnS forums. Remembered reachme2003 and someother guy wanting to sell their AFD for about 1.1k. HSM wise would be about 900-1k.

If HSM come with 'Focus Limiter', it will be perfect but just my POV only.. New DG HSM can be get at around $1400 and AFD around $1600. BTW, the HSM tripod collar can be removed if not use but AFD can't as it is built in. |

For the Sigma, be prepared for the grey-out flaring if any strong light source gets near your lens field-of-view of 70mm for 135-format (not only at your current focal point, but at any focal point).
I used the sigma HSM and the Nikon AF-D. Value = Sigma. Speed = Sigma. Contrast = Nikon. Flare control = Nikon. Range = Sigma (for that extra 10mm wider). Refocus conveniece = Sigma (thanks to the HSM). I own the Sigma, AF-D was borrowed. |
