Default Can't decide between the Fujifilm XT-20 and Sony a6300

    Hi all,

I'm new to the photography world. I've been using a Canon Powershot G7X for the past couple of years and have been pretty happy with it, but I feel that it's time for me to take a step further and to invest in a mirrorless camera (don't fancy the bulk of an SLR.

Most of my photography will be travel photography.

    I prefer the Fujifilm because:
    1) Love the manual dial control
    2) Colours seem better
    3) Lenses are cheaper, wider range, larger 2nd hand market

    But
Video quality is poorer compared to Sony.

However, I already have a GoPro Hero 5 Black.

Is the GoPro video quality comparable (or even better?) than that of the Sony a6300?

Aside from video, is there any major advantage that the Sony has over the Fujifilm?

    Thank you.

CS member since 2006 and you are new to photography? From my reading this is about your preferences. While there is nothing wrong with having preferences because such activity is very personal is it not? Why do people use cameras..
it's saying something about themselves, I am unique/special,I have memories and most importantly, I exist in this world. Let's get to the crux of the matter.

Both cameras are mid range types and technically do the same thing. Here is the thing about life..nothing is perfect but humans wish it were.Using psychology, you have actually made up your mind in Fuji but you want your cake and eat it so to speak.

Amateur photographers take a snapshot while a professional make a picture.
Cameras are just photographic tools. While amateurs think a camera will take a picture ( make all technical decisions) leaving the framing/composition to them.A professional does the same thing in a sense but sees and control the light and make a picture according to his/her vision. In other words cameras don't make pictures humans do.So what's the difference, an amateur let the camera do the work while the professional aquire the knowledge of photography and control the light to make a picture according to his/her visualisation.

There are many people with advanced cameras but they still take snapshots
as seen in photo gallery forum. Hope this provide clarity in your buying desision.

    Thanks for your response.

However, I was hoping for a less philosophical response.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could answer my questions in the OP.

    Thanks!

Hmm not sure how pointing out a member's join date will provide clarity in buying decision?

Back to TS's question, in short I would say just go ahead with the Fuji XT-20

Looks like you have already done your research and know your preferences, so you won't go too wrong. Both Fuji XT-20 and Sony A6300 are rather capable cameras and can fulfill most needs. However there is never a 100% foolproof way of knowing beforehand (if it is easy to make a decision, there will not be so many different brands around and the Buy & Sell will not be so vibrant )

I don't do much video but I would think that both Fuji XT-20 and Sony A6300's video quality will be better that the GoPro's especially in low light situations as their sensors are larger, and you have the option of changing lenses to vary the angle of view. Sony A6300 probably have a few more videographer focused features, but XT-20 should have the basics covered as well. If you have specific features that you need maybe you might want to elaborate them probably the video guys in the forum can give more specific advice.

When you mention 'Lenses are cheaper, wider range, larger 2nd hand market', the Micro 4/3 system came to my mind, but I digress hehe...

Happy shopping and shoot more, worry less about gear

Yeah I'm just worried that the Gopro's video won't match up to that of a camera. It has infinite focal length and thus can't achieve bokeh effects on video and stuff. Just a little disappointed that I can't get the best of both worlds with either of these cameras.

If you guys have any suggestions for a camera (even open to SLRs) that can serve both purposes well, I'm open too.

Micro 4/3s? Have not done much research into that of late. Wonder if they can satisfy my requirements?

I am using Fuji X-T1, so can be a bit biases towards the X-T20. Before I bought my X-T1, I did compare it with the Sony A7 but in term of handling and picture quality, I still prefer the X-T1. You are right to consider the lenses that the companies provide, not only because Fuji lenses are cheaper than Sony, also the quality is amazing. Their latest range, XF 23mm F2, XF 35 F2 and the XF 50mm F2, all are extremely light, very fast and very sharp too, excellent choice to use as travel lenses with the X-T20. However, if you plan to use the camera often in sports or fast action photography/video, than Fuji might not be the best choice.

I am not sure how good you need your video quality to be, but Youtube shows many very good videos taken by the X-T20. Here's one from the many, a more real life kind of video,

Lately I've been just thinking of sucking it up, topping up an extra $1k and just go for the X-T2. Haha. It'll give me everything I want for photos and videos (with the grip).

Thanks for all your suggestions! Feel free to suggest something more suitable for me if you do think of something.

For travel I think m43 is a good size. Smaller senor then Fuji but it should be sufficient in terms of ISO performance. The lens are also smaller. There are also a nice selection of prime. They have very innovative feature like sensor shift to create high resolution image, state of art stabilization (hand help 10 sec), and good water resistance ( em1 mark2)

I use Fuji myself due to the economics and bigger sensor. I owned m43 before and I quite like it. I think it isn't hard to take better photo then go pro. Even Samsung s7 have better video.

Few weeks ago I thought of sucking it up the 1k and go for the X2. But in the end went for the X-T20. Used the extra $ to fund prime lens. Had fun using the X-T20 and still learning, but I suppose it is not as rugged as the X2 given its WR features and better grip. Maybe in the future when Fuji releases X3 with a new sensor I will consider upgrading then.

I am somewhat familiar with the Sony as I have a relative who owns one. Not so on the Fuji. However I was told not so long ago by a wedding photographer that I highly respect that the Fuji would be more down my alley because of it's controls. I like having dials and wheels vs buttons so FWIW...

I tend to agree with Jack. I am one with high level gear who makes a lot of banal snapshot type stuff. Even after many years at it.

I do understand what an aperture is, a shutter is, and what eye s oh is. I have an idea or two about composition. I study a lot. But I will tell you this much for true...I have learned the most and came the farthest by just going out there and shooting. Thoongeng is right about that. Practice practice practice!

I am also a firm believer in that it is sometimes way more productive to practice with gear that limits you than it is to shoot the Porsche so to speak! Gear is great but your brain hand and eye is what matters the most.
