Default Help on Optical Drive for Laptop.

    Hi kind folks,

My Acer's Travelmate 290 combo-drive (Swappable) is dead. it cant read any disc.

Anyone know where i am able to get a new/used swappable drive? or is there any place that repairs optical drives?

I'm on a budget. However, i'll see call acer up to check on the prices. the set is out of warranty.

    Thanks a lot!

Try cleaning the optical head with a CD drive cleaner, it may just be dirty. Works for me.

That's a great suggestion. I have been able to resurrect more than one optical drive that way.

If it still doesn't work, you might want to enquire at Storage Studio in SLS 4th floor if they have stock of laptop form factor optical drives - they used to stock some.

You need to ensure that the shape of the replacement drive is completely right. As far as I know, not all optical drives are interchangeable because of slight differences in size and shape.

All u need to do is. clean the lense with some alchohol.
if it can't be done. it's ok.

take out ur laptop cd rom since it's hot swap.
    unscrew the screw.

u can buy any laptop cdrom to replace it.
but the only thing u need to check with ur new cd rom is...
ask the seller if the cdrom u r going to buy support boot from cd.

NOT every single laptop cdrom suport booting from CD.
    i experience such stupid issue...

    oh really?
can't clean lah. because i noticed a missing screw from the case. i guess it must have "ka jiao" with some parts in the drive.

i found someone that has the combo drive for sale but requires me to trade in my old drive. i guess he's doing a business changing the faculty drives into the case.

the price is $70 with 3 months warranty. i dont mind paying.

btw, how much does one cd-rw/dvd rom laptop drive cost?
