Certainly it is okay to use both cameras...the 5D will be the main with the 20D as your backup. But as TMC mentioned, the difference in the format will mean that you may need different lenses for both cameras. The 5D won't take EF-S lenses, or any of those 'digital only' ones.
And though I can't explain it very well, the capability of the 5D sensor will reveal weaknesses in cheaper lenses. There will be significant light fall off or vignetting on some lenses at wider apertures and you'll need to stop down significantly to avoid this problem. With that, you lose some creative options and also the original low-light capability that the lens is supposed to yield. Do check out the 5D review at www.dpreview.com for more information about this phenomenon...under photographic tests. |

of course it's ok. they're both canon and share even the same batteries
just take note that Canon EF-S, Sigma DC, Tokina DX and Tamron Di2 lenses cannot/should not be used on the 5D. you could still have such lenses for exclusive use on the 20D.I also got a FF together with the 20D but it's an EOS 5 SLR. |

fWord said it all. If you have a good collection 35mm lenses, there shouldn't be a problem except getting used different crop factor. If you have a bag full of EF-S lenses, sure you want to have 2 separate set of lenses?

20D and 5D is quite a good match - esp so if you are not shooting professonally. You will get double mileage for quite a few lens combination. eg. 35 mm is a nice 50mm on a 20 D and superb focal length on the 5D. 85 mm is great with the 20D and 5D too Some like the 135mm on both the cam too. If you have the 35L or 24L, you will realise why it is so highly rated if you shoot on the 5D or FF. But as mentioned by fWord, do not get sucky lens. The full frame will show it. But the 1 Series will seriously help you to get the shots that the 20D or 5D may not do. I hope I have confused your decision further. ![]() Last edited by tOGGY; 21st December 2005 at 07:47 PM. |

2 formats? Both are cameras. Its not like one's a 35mm and the other's a MF or LF.

The second part of your question does not make sense. Obviously they are compatible systems (exception being the EF-S lens mount). However, the crop factor will require you to plan your lens acquisition to max out the gain on the crop factor and the wide angle on the full frame. This being the case, details of your lens collection will probably give you a good guide if the 5D is a good companion to your existing 20D. If terms of user interface, the 1 series is a different animal from the rest. Existing 20D users will find the 5D user interface familiar and comfortable. To be honest, I rather invest in quality lenses than another body unless there is a specific need for it. Cheers, |
