the monopod is a one legged tripod

it is used to give you that little bit more stability while you are shooting hand held.
at the same time it is lighter and more portable than a tripod.
Big lenses are very heavy and the monopod will support the weight so that your arms will not become so tired.

you can also use it as a walking stick and a weapon to defend yourself from wild beasts.

you can call it a poor man's VR tech

A tripod is a 3 legged stand while a monopod is 1. A monopod is not a 1 legged tripod.

Cheers...

I felt monopod is more useful than a tripod. I would carry a monopod around but not a tripod.
