Default 1D Mark II Settings

have always been shooting RAW, so this never came up. But tried JPG out of camera the other day, colours looked quite bad.

Was just wondering what other 1D2 owners set for punchy out-of-camera JPGs for sharpness, contrast, matrix etc so that minimal tweaking required in post processing?

thanks!

For direct out of cam JPEGs, I am currently using the following settings. Take note that I am still playing around with the settings and trying to familiarize myself with the cam. I do not shoot RAW at the moment due to system constraints/lack of storage space, but hope to do in future when I upgrade my comp. Of course shooting RAW is definitely better and its merits has been mentioned many times, so lets not start a RAW vs JPEG war here shall we?

My settings (subject to change):

JPEG Quality: 8-9 (Large/Fine)
Sharpness: +3
Contrast: +1
Saturation: 0
Colour Matrix : Standard
White Balance: AWB

Many 1DII users find out of camera JPEGs to be quite soft when at default settings, so if you want fairly sharp images straight out of cam, set your sharpness settings to at least +3 or more. The 1DII's AWB is fairly accurate in most situations except when under strong ambient indoor lighting (e.g orange/warm lighting) when it results in a strong colour cast to the images.

I still do tweak my images in PS, but its mostly just to touch up the photo, adjust the levels, maybe a bit of curves, and then apply USM and then save it. USM settings depends on personal preference, and whether its for web or for print, mostly the value is between 100%-300%. YMMV.

On the contrary, I have always been shooting JPEG until only very recently.

I personally feel JPEGS on the 1DMKII give very good image quality and colour. After all, there is in-camera processing.

This shot was shot in jpeg and has default 0 settings in sharpness, contrast and saturation. A little USM (120%) was added. No other post-processing was done, not even curves.

I've also been experimenting a bit. Was trying out custom set for matrix - mid sat, color tone=1 but seems too saturated for me. Going to try out matrix=portrait

thanks for sharing!

Nice shot.

Agree with you, the JPEGs out of camera look very good, the colours and details are all there, and coming from a non 1 series cam (10D/20D/300D etc) you can really 'feel' the improvement in the dynamic range. At lower ISOs (ie 400 and below) the image quality is excellent with very low noise.

You're really close because your settings was almost what I set on my old camera. If you find your image overly saturated, then set the settings a little bit lower. Since you were doing this in RAW, why not use EOSViewerUtility and set the settings that you would like to see then reset the settings in your cam.

If you were to try Portrait mode in the colour matrix, you miight find the colours a little bit too muted. As what Garion posted on his settings earlier, Standard is almost a sure way to get accurate colours. Alternatively you might want to try AdobeRGB.

cool, maybe i should try using custom curve through EVU as what you mentioned. But just for fun only lah - cos i'll still use RAW most of the time. I want to try JPG for the "not-so-important" shoots. Not that JPG cannot match up to RAW - just that it will make my life easier without having to do RAW conversions.
