    Default Would photos be lost?

I'm going to install Windows XP on my computer, which is now running on the antique Win98 OS.

Was wondering.... Would pictures data be in danger of being lost?
The manual advises me to backup important files....

Yes, please backup your files somewhere, like on thumbdrives or external hard disks. There's a reason why Microsoft told you to do that. Don't take a chance.

Well. 10 CDs or 2 DVDs. =) Get a DVD burner. Not that expensive ~$100 and it'll serve you well.

    Yes, Backup, backup, backup

Whenever I install a new OS, I often do a clean installation, ie. fdisk->full format-> install
Of course there is the short cut way, that is upgrade on the existing OS. But personally, I prefer clean installation so that all old DLL files are wiped out before installation.

I thought if you install a new OS, your whole hard disk will get formatted?

Purchase an external disk drive 80GB at less than $200 is definitely more value-for-$$$ than thumbdrives or new CD/DVD writers.

no. you can choose to upgrade, which will update all the existing files or choose a clean install, which would format the drive before installing. people often choose the clean install because updating sometimes causes new problems to occur.

During XP upgrade, it will backup your existing 9x system so you can uninstall XP and go back if you have problems.

Although clean installation is painful for the first time, at least you know for sure your DLLs are clean ones, so less headache in the long run.

    Option 1:
    Check http://www.hardwarezone.com/home/

    Option 2:
Spend a weekend window shopping at SLS or Funan.

    But

1st thing is, what is your preferred brand?

2nd: as for price, depending on the capacity, should be ~$200+

3rd: External or Internal? I prefer internal b'cos since you have many photos, backup will be faster. As for external, need to backup via USB port. But external is more portable. If need to transfer photos to other PCs, I use thumbdrive or email. Choice is yours.

Just a 'famous' or popular brand. Not those never-heard-before-dunno-from-where brand.

    I prefer external.
    Capacity? About 20gbs?

I wouldn't bother getting 20GB. For backup purpose you should get 80 GB and above. Or else you'll be running out of disk space in no time.

An upgrade is easier but a clean install is better. Whichever path you take do backup your data.
