The Sony World Photography Awards, created by the World Photography Organisation, is the world’s largest photography competition – the 2016 competition received an astounding 230,103 images from 186 countries. This year, with just one month until submissions close, the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards releases new entries from its Open competition, and asks its panel of judges to share their advice to photographers worldwide, who will be entering the Professional, Open and Youth competitions plus the National Awards. Judges on the awards’ panel include esteemed industry experts who offered some key pointers and advice to anyone keen on entering the 107 competitions. Some important advice include being mindful of cliché images, the use of good storytelling and expressing one’s individuality.

All entries to the Sony World Photography Awards are free at www.worldphoto.org. The deadlines for each competition are:

  • January 5, 2017 – Open competition
  • January 5, 2017 – Youth competition
