Default Borders having 15% off all books today

Bought 2 books "The Art of Seeing : The Best of Reuters Photography" and "Light in the Landscape:A photographer's Year".

The Reuters one is very good value for $. Was $33 before discount. Dunno why so cheap as the list price is around US$42. There was one copy left on the shelves.

    Default Kako Speedlite?

Hi, anyone out there ever heard of Kako speedlite? I was at this 2nd hand dealer that recommended me one for $98? It comes with a bracket and he claims that is compaitable with the Nikon 5700. The Guide No. is 28 I think. Looks damn plasticky to me...

why get this? might as well get a Achiever one or the one HOCL is talking about.

This flash has a slave mode if I'm not wrong and you're paying a premium for it. You don't need the slave mode cos the 5700 has a hotshoe.

Also this particular flash will cost less than $100 brand new....

Anyway, this is out of topic

    Default Borders far too expensive.

I've stopped buying anything at Borders these days. Even with 15% discount the prices are far too high. They have silently been increasing their prices over the last 4 years. I find that buying from amazon.com works out cheaper even including shipping. For example, John Shaw's books on landscape photography sell for around US$17 each. Borders prices is $49. May as well order 4-5 books from amazon and save a lot.

    hey sriram,

the reason why prices of books at borders have been increasing is because the USD has increased significantly over the last 4 years. Before the asian financial crisis (in '97) the SGD-USD was traded at something like $1.49. Now it's more like $1.78. (it was $1.85 some months ago). That's a near 30% increase in exchange rates alone.

did some maths before i bought ma book. A-Z Photography by Lee Frost costs US$17.47. Add the US$4.99 item charge and it becomes $22.46. Say you buy 5 books and spilt the US$6.99 delivery charges. This will amount to an additional US$1.99 per book. Total cost of the book = US$17.47+4.99+1.99 = US$24.45 or SG$43.52 (assuming 1.78 exchange rate).

bought the book at SG$41.65 yesterday. It was SG$49.00 before discount.

managed to save some, got to inspect my book before i bought it and brought it home immediately.

you're right too. Borders is NOT neccessarily always cheaper. As always, do your maths and wait for the right moment to go in. (gosh, sounds like i'm investing in something.. hahaa).

    enjoy!

Yes I know that very well, but Borders' prices seem to have increased a lot more. 4-5 yrs ago when I used to compare prices with online stores, the prices were comparable. Not any more.
