Default Help!

Hi!

New with a DSLR and still playing with the 5D .... so all advice is appreciated.

Made a mess of my second use of the 5D at Big Boyz Toyz yesterday. I set the WB to Tungsten as I believe the lighting at that time is so. And this is what I got!

I hope it is not a problem with the camera but with the setting. Did not notice during review as the original blue screen protector was still on the LCD!

If it is a setting issue, any way to save it using post processing?

Thanks.

Here's the reason.

You used flash for the shot. The WB for flash is about 6800K. Tungsten WB on the other hand is 2800K, on the opposite side of the WB scale compared to flash. This is why you end up with a very cool (blue) photo.

I suggest you stick with AWB till you learn more about WB. Although AWB is not very accurate either but it's good enough, especially when using with flash or shooting outdoors.

If you can't figure which WB settings to use on location, you could shoot RAW as Phildate suggested, and correct it later. It also helps to eliminate any inconsistencies due to changes in lighting conditions.

U can do a custom WB on any grey/mid-tone wall. U will get colour corrected shots although I prefer a warmer look at these kind of shoots taking into consideration the type of lighting... a custom WB gives a very clinical white look...

Well, if you're using PS, you can add a a Curves adjustment layer, on the bottom right corner, click the white point button, and then click a point on the image where you feel is white. You can also use the black point for additional accuracy.

Take a look at the adjusted image:

White point set on her teeth (might not be the best as some pp do not have very white teeth).

For demostration sake, I didn't make it very white-balanced.. just to prove a point.

My advise is like UY79. Use AWB and concentrate more on framing, exposure etc. One you get the hang of all that then you can move on to more complex stuff. You did say you are new to DSLR.

Brothers ....

Thanks for all the advice, tips and even the PS adjusted samples.

Yes, indeed I am new to a DSLR and was actually using the Big Boyz Toyz to familiarise with the cam as well as the many features.

Hope to continuously improve with all your expert advice.

Cheers!

Paintshop Pro X has this new feature called Smart Photo Fix.
When you enter this feature, PSP will auto smart correct for you but its always crap. I resetted it and choose my own white balance. Basically, selecting the supposed to be white areas with the dropper on the left picture preview box. I selected the overexposed patch of the costume, her teeth and the white area of her eye. Next, I push the White bar until the arrow hits the histogram levels. Decrease a bit of shadow and that's it. But for this case, I also did a "1" point of the Clarify feature.

Spurssy's try is a bit cool. But as he said he did not try to completely whiten it.

Sulhan's has a tad of blue but is good.

Drudkh's attempt has the most natural colour

UY79's has the most punch but is a little oversharpened. But I feel it looks the most magazine like... that is very very good!

BTW, catseye, u got her at a very good angle and nice smile...
