The only way to find out is to try it out!

I hope I can do some testing with my friends IR tools these couple of days.

I still have my 20 yr old Minolta SR-1 on a 50mm. But the problem is getting the required film and master the workflow which I think is a PAIN.

Alternatively, hafto resort to old second hand 2mp digicams. I heard they do well in IR.

I too, had the same qn in mind when I got my 5D... Did a preliminary test with my TV remote & yes, it's able to capture the IR emitted (meaning it can detect & capture IR). However, when I try it with my fren's Hoya R72 filter on my kit lens, custom white balance (was pointing to a big patch of green grass) failed repeatedly (keep getting error msg). Tried snapping some test shots but can't see a thing thru the viewfinder with the filter on & the shots all come out black black (was totally blur & dunno wat to do at tt pt of time, shld've set longer shutter speed I guess)... Was rather disappointed. Sighz...

U mean the TV remote test?
It's very simple, juz go to a dark place, take a snap with ur cam while pressing ur TV remote (with the IR part pointing twds ur cam) & see if u can capture any pink-purplish dot in ur pic...

U can refer to the details here.

Huh, use hp's IR port ah?? Er... me nvr try tt b4 la. U can be the pioneer!!

IR filters cost higher than other filters like UV & CP... I was told a 52mm Hoya R72 filter cost abt $40 new, while a 77mm one can cost up to $200+... Think there r oso alternative filters like the Cokin P007? U can read up more abt IR filters here. Other than filters, heard tt not all lens (if u're using dSLR) r suitable for IR too, gotta trial & error lor...

Do look out for occasional cheap sales of the IR filters in Buy & Sell...

Despite being feverish and down with a flu, I dragged myself to a nearby playground and took some shots. I have been wanting to do this for some time already and my friend finally borrowed me all the necessary tools to take IR.

Here goes:

This is out of camera result.

After some photochop. I remember trying some channel mix, levels, selective colors. After I saved the copy, i forgot to save the workflow and promptly closed it. Must be the medicine.

What you guys think?

It would be nice if any PS sifu here can give some tips for the benefits of all.

Shouldn't IR shots give the false colours direct from the camera? I thought shouldn't need to PS it... no idea, just guessing here... frankly the original shot looks like a red filter case.

Looks like the KM5D is IR capable, without the issues seen with the KM7D...

Checkout the IR/UV forums on custom white balance to get a better "start" point for PS ....

thanx for all the replies!..... yeah..dynaxattack's shots dun haf the obvious flares seen on the 7d shots.. cool! think will get an ir filter soon.. =)

dynaxattack... are you using the kit lens? with the R72filter? if not.. which filter did u use?

also..please pardon some beginner question from me...
1)the top of the photo appears to be darker than the rest of the picture..is it normal?
2)the right side of the pavilion appears to have a small patch that is lighter than the rest.. is this the same problem faced with the 7ds?

Yup... KM5D is capable of doing IR photo...
Please have a look at my pic in the link below:
http://fotografer.net/lf/?id=239299&...e68207eb0731f8
Taken using Hoya R72; F/3.5; 8s

U have to do custom white balance first before shooting...

Cheers

The ability to shoot IR degrades image quality and colour accuracy.

Take a look at photos in this thread. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=8429051

The blacks and blues are all tinted with a reddish cast caused by IR sensitivity of the sensor. To rectify this, you need a hot mirror filter which cost about $200+.

1. I got the WB settings wrong hence the Red-filter-like results. (Needed heavy PS to fix it!)
2. I m using Cokin P(0007) IR filter.
3. The darker part on the top of the photo is due to different clouds.
4. There is some patches in the pavilion. Dunno why?? (Its NIR anyway)
5. I m not using the kit lens. Some standard Minolta zoom lens.

Not bad.
At f3.5 still need 8s and ...if only it can modify to be handheld without tripod
