Just got my unit and started playing with it. I have to say the TTL (mode) works effortlessly with my KMD5D. The auto zoom works well with the lens and effectively read the flash compensation settings on the camera. All in all, gives you kinda good controls over flash. Now haf to dig more knowledge on flash photography from you wonderful bunch here.
So i'll put up some questions about the flash system here from time to time hopefully to speed up the learning curve. Fyi, I have RTFM and I think it doesnt tell you everything of it. So sad. 1st Q. When on wireless, the camera built-in flash has to be opened up to transmit signal to the off-camera unit. Everytime you fire a shot, the camera built-in flash will also fire, is there a way to disable so that only the off-camera unit fires?? 2nd Q. Ratio flash (1:2/2:1) is only for use if you have more than 1 compatible External Flash systems (e.g. 5600HS, 3600HS and such? Thanks in advance. |

1. no, the camera's flash has to fire to tell the wireless flash(es) when to start & stop. but it will have little effect on the output of the photo.
2. only 5600HS supports ratio flash, currently 7D/5D does not support. |

Well, all you need to do is to set the flash to fire manually... Good old technique... I don't see any problem with that.. Hart |

You can get the built-in flash not to contribute to exposure. Set it to one step above your flash-sync speed.
i.e 7D max 1/125th with AS on, set to 1/160 with wireless HSS. Cheers QX |

When in wireless mode, the camera onboard flash is used only to trigger the remote flash and does not contribute any illumination.
In my film D5, I have to press the "flash mode button" to get it to play a part in "ratio" mode. |

AncientMariner is right, I have done some testing in a darkroom with the 5600HS off camera facing subject from 90' left. And it did illuminate the subject from left leaving centre and left in nice shadow. (drudkh suggestion is good too)
Now my second question regarding the same subject, if the built-in flash is only used as a "morse code" transmitter to the off-camera flash, then how can i adjust it to work as fill-in flash?? I dont think can do ratio either...is it right?? ![]() |
