Default Odd AF sensor behaviour in 7D

This is what's happening:

First off, I set the AF sensor to the middle one and then turn the focus-area switch to "LOCK".

I take a picture in single-shot mode or in continuous-shooting mode.

While the picture appears on the LCD during the *instant playback* period (not when I press the Playback button for "long duration" playback), i.e., while the picture is still showing on the screen, I press the 4-way controller (any direction).

The Recording Mode Display appears. The AF sensor location has moved from the centre, to whichever direction I had pressed the 4-way controller, despite the focus-area switch not having moved from "LOCK".

You can see how this might cause problems: a few times now I've inadvertently moved the AF sensor like this, and ended up with the wrong part of the picture in focus.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or can suggest what I might have missed, or what I might need to do. Apart from not pressing the 4-way controller during the instant playback period, that is!

I was quite certain my 7D did not exhibit this peculiar behaviour but with my 7D at KMSC, I wasn't able to verify it ... until today when I got my 7D & 5600HS back from KMSC.

I can confirm that when I press the 4-way controller in any direction during instant playback of the shot I have just taken, the recording mode display appears and my AF sensor does not move from its set position (centre sensor, with my focus area switch set at LOCK).

Hmmm ... strange difference in behaviour. My firmware version is 1.10e. I think rocketsox's firmware is 1.10u ... what about yours, TME? Anyone else on 1.10e can confirm what their 7D behaviour is? I can see how annoying this can be if you could unintentionally change your AF sensor.

I never know this camera can do something like this... however, I never use the instant preview nor looking at the LCD during shooting. Just to conserve the battery power, also dont look good in front of the client.. hehe..

neither did mine have this problem when i have the instant replay.
i have tried diff settings from 2secs - 5secs - 10secs, with displaying image only, image + histogram & image + exif info.

Is there any significant difference between firmware 1.10u and 1.10e? That is, if it turns out that the problem occurs in 1.10u but not in 1.10e, can I change the firmware in my apparently US-market 7D to an "e" version without cooking the camera?

If it's not a firmware difference, maybe the sensor behaviour is influenced by a specific camera menu setting. Might have to compare my 7D & apchoo's side-by-side, menu by menu, to see if that's the case.

The alternative is that there's a production difference in the hardware. If it's that, I've already trained myself not to press the 4-way controller in "instant playback" mode...most of the time.

Hi rocketsox, we can compare notes when I go to Melbourne. I think apchoo told u about it... mine behaves like yours and is on the same firmware. So let's see if there are any other stuff that is set differently.

Just got back from KMSC. The showroom's camera also had the same problem.... the techs are not aware of it though... he also was surprised.

Cos yours the board ok lor... but your meter scale is not working... I think the electronics got a lot of problems... dun know what else we will discover... the tech was telling me that maybe it was time for KMSC techs to go shooting to find out all the faults on the 7D.

I also say! But it's quite costly to equip each tech with a 7D and a lens.

No lar... real hands-on experience shooting... I mean we are the ones who are feeding back faults to KMSC cos we actually use these cameras.
