Congratulations, Joseph. An historical event, in many ways.

Please be reminded he won with time differences biggest since 1972...an almost 50 year old space of time. In other words he is the greatest butterfly swimmer ever. Even against MP.

3 quarters of a second faster than a trio including Phelps...a truly remarkable powerhouse fastest man in the world swimmer.

I think Michael Phelps is a bit worn out because he is competing in many events. Schooling have save his energy for one event - 100m butterfly.
Even if Michael Phelps lose one gold medal, he is still a legend because he have already won many medals for his country.

There are two ways to become a national hero in Olympics.
Win the first medal or win many medals.

Schooling decide to eat fried carrot cake to celebrate his victory.
I have fried carrot cake for dinner just now to celebrate with him

I am proud of this boy and I am very happy he is a true Singaporean Olympic gold medalist. Whether he is trained else where or not is not important. He is born and spend his childhood here before going abroad for his training. As to the question on will he return home, that is not important. Like every other citizen, he has a right to choose his life.

I don't agree with people who say wining in most important. Buying the medal means nothing. As long as our citizen is there to compete among the best, we are already proud of him/her.

Last but not least, please do not compare Michael Phelps with him. Michael is 31 and he holds many other records. Yes beating him is an achievement but it did not make Schooling greater than him. I am sure Schooling may 1 day be better than Michael but let's wait for that day to come and celebrate.

How much money does a gold medal earn you in Singapore?
It is the camera, not the photographer.

And a four year exemption from NS. Which is probably fair because a gold medal is good for the nation.

It's a deferment not an exemption.

No one can be exempted from NS even if you're son of the President.

To exempt Joseph from NS we have to pass a new law.

NS may not make Joseph swim faster. But it will make him a better Singaporean just like it has made so many of us.
