Default Buying lens from Hong Kong? Advise pls, thanks

Hi,
may be going to HK, was thinking if it is worth it to buy lens from there.

I see the prices form Tin Cheung looks very attractive.

http://www.tincheungcamera.com.hk/

Have anyone bought from Tin Cheung before? Are these grey sets, local warranty or international warranty sets?

Is there any GST type of taxes in HK that will be added on to the selling price?

I am more interested in Sigma and Tokina lenses, so do Sigma and Tokina have international warranty that is recognise by Singapore service centers? I assume that local HK warranty is useless in Singapore?

Any trustworthy shops that are cheaper than Tin Chueng to recommend?

Thanks for any advise you can give me.

Nick

yes, I've been to tin cheung. its basically like the camera workshop of the area.
prices of new stuff is good. Used stuff quite so-so.

In the same building is zhao xiang guan. I find them better for some other things.

bro.. i'm just studying here there, not in shopping mode
too busy to even go down to TST to look at the shops.

but most of the time i hear people talk about wing shing and tin cheung. so i guess these 2 shops are probably the more reliable ones.

I bought the 70-200 VR from HK recently, after a few failed attempts previously, by myself and by my friends. Avoid TST - the shops there sucks and are expensive. As a matter of fact, TST is an area to avoid all together if you can.

MongKok is a fascinating shopping area, that's where Wing Shing, the much talked about photo shop is. I bought my VR there, and I'm glad it worked out that way - that I've to pick it up myself. I got to pick and choose the lens - which I got one in perfect condition. There are 2 Wing Shing there, but I think I went to the main one (between the two "vegatable" streets). Do a search...

I got an intl warranty VR - with the yellow card. Wing Shing accepts credit card with no surcharge ( be advised that they'll do an identity verification against your passport). It's better to pay cash to avoid the about 2% forex commision that your bank will be happy to charge you. You're buying there to pay lesser, so every effort to cut down on surcharge is crucial to make sense.

Not all lens and photographic gears are cheaper there - so you need to do some research for the stuff you're going to buy. Lens (except those like the VR) do not normally need warranty coverage - so if you come across one that's in good condition and cheap, you should not worry about the warranty. Of course, if you're paranoid over warranty, then you should just buy it in Singapore, and save yourself all the trouble of looking to buy it in HK. Things in Sin is pretty competitve with those in HK, except for a few items like the VR.

Wing Shing is actually pretty ex for some items. They are like your Harvey Norman in SG.
Eg they quoted me HKD6080 for the Canon 350D (grey set) when i can get the HK set for HKD6100 elsewhere.

Try Kwong Tai Photo Supplies at 30 Stanley St... ask for Eric. They give u actual no-nonsense low pricing.

BTW change your cash in SG (HK money changers give lousy rates). Eitherwise, u lose 2% when u swipe your card.

It's alright. Now I know where it is - in Central.

Maybe it's just me but I have never had good experiences with the equipment shops in Central. Either too pricey, or just bad attitude.

Tin Cheung and Wing Shing has been the best for me. Of course this is from an overseas tourist perspective.

Going to HK next week. Tried calling a few of the reputable shops aforementioned but non seems to carry the sigma 70-200 F.2.8 except for Tin Cheung. Wonder if this shop can be trusted or not...hmmm

Tin Cheung is one of the best shops in HK to buy gear from. Very reputable. Nice used gear if they have them as well.
