i am still learning to accept others for wat they do.

got a film nikon with nikon strap n a tamrac bag, i am actually proud of this cause when i walk around to talk photos, i am doing some things i like (eg take photos) with my own money . an achievement for me while for many its something long forgotten.

    hence
    a pride to carry a camera bad with nikon ;
    an achievement to shoot a photo which i can call my own good shots;
an experience to live this life the way i want.

1 Let me say that his car is the only one of this model in Singapore.

2 My friend and I are certainly past 50. He more so. We have seen more death and life than the average blokes in Singapore. We know what is death and life.

3 You still feel that middle aged blokes cannot drive past 90kph? That expensive cars are for show-off only? One of my friends, even older with a triple heart bypass, travels with this guy - not at 250kph, but "slighty" slower. And at night!

Anything wrong with being old and carrying a Nikon D2X strap, carrying Domke bag and browsing books?

Dude, go see doctor, you need medicine...

No need lah. There are so many doctors in Kopitiam here.

    Just tell us your symptoms.

Have you been sleeping well and have a good appetite?

Maybe you should not be looking at middle-aged men so much. Don't you have chio bo of your age to play play with?

Ask your mother to boil you some barley water with winter melon and rock suger. It will cool the fire in your system down a bit.

If you really want to show, must show the best of the best......

A few Leicas body, with all the wide, standard and mid range lens. Maybe carry a Billingham bag? That alone probably will be more than 20,000 easily....

    Or a 1Ds MkII with 50mm f1.0, 35mm f1.4, 85mm f1.2, 70-200 f2.8, 135mm f2 and a Billingham bag....about $25,000-$30,000?
Woah! You talk like a Pro leh.

    [QUOTE]

Didn't read all the other post, so many, and some post sound so pissed off...

Anyway, don't see what the fuss is about. the man you saw probably don't think that the D2X cannot be hung around the neck, while browsing books in the bookstore. guess he could treat the D2X like the D50 or the F65...

Don't know what he was doing before or after he visits the bookstore anyway.

I don't think its a big deal if a photographer hangs a camera around his neck, esp when he is travelling overseas or going to take photos. Of course, other photographers like me would kaypo and find out what he is using.

In the past with SLR camera, most people would not asked this kind of question, whether it's showoff or what. Now, with DSLR and other cameras being affordable, almost everyone can own a camera, people start asking, are you a photographer, or just show-off!

Personally, unless you want to take photographs, why bother to buy camera? want to showoff can buy many other things to showoff...

well, the thread has got some airing. i will give my view.

the issue here is about personal safety and security. not about $$, not about brand, not about jealousy, etc. i will attempt to use an analogy to explain. today, we have seen and read about 'some groups of people wearing it on their body or flashing their brand new, large lcd screen handphones in public places. eg. mrt stns, etc. unfortunately, it invites unwanted attention, leading to handphone theft, etc. such crimes are on the rise.

for this particular gentleman, taking into account his age and corresponding wisdom, i would think that more discretion be exercised in this respect.

    peace.

In my opinion, looking at the perspective from safety and security point of view, what you observed was perfectly fine in a bookstore in Bras Basah Complex in Singapore. He was not carrying his gear in the dark paths of Mt Vernon Road at 3.00 am.

If you were truly concerned about the safety of this not-so-wise middle aged gentleman, then you should have gone up to him to remind of the grave danger he had put himself in.

I think that would be a much wiser and kinder and considerate thing to do than to criticise him here in this forum, don't you think so?

Don't you think exercising some consideration for your fellow photographer in great mortal danger is a wiser thing to do?

Don't worry too much about him.

He might be an old Kung Fu master. One chop immobilizes 2 people and one kick smashes 2 balls.

honestly, it is my view about exercising personal responsibility for one's safety and security. and that does not include telling others how to exercise it. the purpose of bringing it up here is to highlight the issue by using what i observed there. no intent to criticize him. if i did, i apologise.

After reading this thread, seems like people like to buy camera like jewellery to show instead of using it to shoot....

The concept of exercising personal responsibility is a valid one. But you are applying your "standards" to another. To me, and others, what you described is hardly an example of personal irresponsibility.

    But there is another aspect.

Sometimes, a person may not know that he is in danger, which you felt strongly he was in. You felt it so strongly that you brought it up in this forum. And I think if you know that that person is in danger, then your have failed to exercise your social and civil responsibilty to warn the person of his danger.

    i laughed.
If you think he is in danger just tell him.

It is funny if you felt the danger and quickly hire a cab to go home and post in forum, believing it will save somebody...

well. it has been the trend, why do u think theres suddenly so many consumer/entry level dslr sales ?

nt surprise our threadstarter feel this way...

but its just that u haven seen some small rich kids taking a idmkii / idsmkii with a "l" lens and start walking around and give u a sneering glare at ur equipment as if it doenst worth a single cent.

and worse. sometimes i dress shabbily. i know. cos weather's hot, i would go peninsula plaza, and i was looking at some lenses, and there comes this kid, secondary school i suppose, give me a sneering glare, as if he darn big balls like that, and guess wad he was holding that makes him give that look.

*hint. nikon's entry level dslr with kitlens.*

nt surprised if one kiddo come to me and show off his equipment to me, coz my 275 will go into his face.

but a 40-50yr old man with d2x, aiyah.. ok wad... last time CS someone said a old man as 2-3 D2X's with VR lenses and bring them all go Zoo and shoot... so that guy more richer lor.. so everyone must go katok him ?
