Default Need help to understand the slave function

Hi folks,

Got a question on the slave function of the Sea and Sea YS90, fired from a housed Canon S50, via an optic cable.

I noticed that the pictures that turned out look like the flash didn't fire (meaning no colours in picture).

Could it be that:

1. I did not aligh the strobe properly, or

2. There is something wrong with the camera!, or

3. There is something wrong with my settings (used ISO 50 and 100 settings and full discharge).

Wish I had the opportunity to talk to beivied or lovells that day. Hope someone can help.

Cheers, Jeff

I assume you are using the YS-90 DX or YS-90 Auto [2 strobes 'made' for Digital Cameras]

What setting was your strobe on? I think that is the determining factor.

..... hmmm.. low battery?

i doubt you would have problem with strobe placement, since you had been using uw film for some time, and strobe placement theory is pretty much the same with digital ..

i never use sea and sea, so i duno exactly... is yours optically triggered?

I really suspect is the strobe setting. If he's using the YS-90 DX, there are 3 functions available to trigger the strobe off- Sync Cord, Optic Fibre or Cordless Slave. So depends on how he set the strobe, it would have affected why it didn't fire.

i suspect u either turn on the pre-flash(while your camera doesn;t fire one) or vice versa.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies ... I am not ruling out user error, as I am a little rusty, but I don't think I am *that* rusty :P

OK as for settings, I had the camera on (initially) auto, and them on Av. Strobe slave was turned "on", and power knob set to "on" (not "pre"). Tried several seetings for strobe light power ... full, -1 etc.

Battery could have been an issue, now that you mention it ... the set I brought were old and I used another "used" set.

So ... I guess there are too many variables to get a proper troubleshoot done. No worries, practice makes perfect

Cheers, Jeff

Can bring it along to tomorrow's bash if you are coming. We can try fiddling with it at Loyang. I will bring along some freshly charged AA battery.
