Default Epson photo stylus R300? R310?

Need advice please... i'm using epson's R300 (US version, in Asia its called the R310, i believe)... but not getting optimal results printing from my pc. photos are nice (on screen) but not as good on paper (even 4r or 5x7 sizes)... have re-loaded up new epson ink, but... so am i using the wrong software? what would you reccomend? is there an easy epson software tool to print pictures without too many calibration/quality issues from my pc? or is it necessary to always use photoshop or higher end software to get good results? appreciate any feedback.

Quick answer: No... you can just use the Microsoft Picture and Fax viewer app to print and it will look nice. The irony is that if you use the higher end software, you may end up with not as good colors if you apply the settings off.

Try this: take a jpeg that is already in sRGB. Use the Microsoft app to print. To test it out, use the "Best Photo" under the Basic screen and print out a 4R using Premium Glossy Photo Paper. The image should be very close to what you see on your screen if your screen is profiled. If it is, then the settings on your app is the issue...
