i believe there was a poll some weeks back asking for opinions on which genre of photography was the easiest. Some bright people voted for nude 'cos 1 said 'all there was was to undress', i didn't bother to clarify if he was serious. They prolly only voted so 'cos they haven't done it, if they only knew....

A few weeks ago, I was hanging around here lor. Anyway, wouldn't have bothered, even if I did see them.

Think ultimately there are a lot of people who do model shoots and nude shots for the sake of seeing some female posing for them. A lot of them can't derive anything else other than what is immediately present to them. And most don't even have a pre-visualisation of what is supposed to be achieve through the shooting.

For me, I think nude art is difficult for two reasons:
    (1) Not interested in human. Not the shape, not the form and not the expression. I prefer much more to abstract things that are more meaningful to me anyway. Trees especially...
    (2) No proficiency in shooting indoors. Have absolutely no interest at the current moment to learn things like lighting and positioning in indoors environment. Somehow, I feel more comfortable to shoot outdoors, even if that means bringing my heavy gears around with me.

Com'on, they don't think that far. A pretty girl is a pretty girl is a pretty girl. If what i'm shooting is a pretty girl then by george i'm going to capture a pretty girl. That's as much pre-visualisation as one can get. i'm still waiting for evolution to catch up here and wondering if it'll ever will.

If you feel it's difficult then all the more you should try it out. hahaha. You can abstract nude too u know. nude doesn't mean having to show the bits (i'm sure u know that), capturing texture is mostly what nude it as said by my teacher. as for lighting, nude is mostly a one-light issue.

Oh.... I wouldn't mind showing u guys my pics when i get back. I really like to get feedback on what reactions/feelings they give. For me the challenge was looking for the fine line between erotic & nude, and which side of the line my vision had lead me to. I like what i got, as did my teacher & classmates. well as least none of them voiced out that they didn't look like nude. On the whole very very interesting. I wouldn't mind shooting a few more when i have the chance to again.

ahhh but there's soft porn & blatantly-in-your-face porn. There's no skill involved in the latter but the former does take some degree of know-how.

I wonder if I were to shoot a japanese nude model (a young chio lady), and shoot her with the intent of nude photography, how would the photographs be intrepreted. Soft or nude? A worthy challenge no?

What do you mean by evolution catching up? What's the selective pressure for the evolution? What niche are you trying to fill up?

Yes, you can abstract nude. In fact, some of the best photographer in the business, like Edward Weston, does pretty awesome abstract nude art of his wife. Most of those pictures just abstraction of human form in shapes and curves... Again, that's not my cup of tea, cos I don't see things in shapes. Not yet anyway.

As for taking it up as a challenge? Well, if it's convenient I won't mind. Just don't expect me to go all the way to look for a model, look for studio, fork out extravagant sums and whatnot to go for the challenge. Simply too much hassle.

Anyway, would probably go for macro next. Am thinking of conducting pet-project of mushroom foraging around Singapore, after I'm done with my current research sometime from the mid of next year.

Yar yar! Let's have photo-sharing session. Khairi have this awesome publication of his work that I bet he would be dying to share! :P
I only have one good picture for this year though... a picture of some trees.

Yes, you could do that. But it doesn't make much sense to me to do that.
Art isn't about doing whatever that could be done. It's about doing something that is perceived as a work with an actual meaning, no matter how skewed that could be, by the artist. So, a snapshot to one could very well be an art as well to the artist.

Japanese photographers are awesome. Haha~! This reminds me... I'd better remind Vamptress to pass me this CD on a certain japanese photographer!

Hmm... have you guys heard of Hiromix? Another kind of "street" photographer...

Frankly, is there a distinction between nude art and nude photographs? I don't know. It's like what you'd said, a very elitist concept to differentiate the two out.
Must nude art be those that ain't erotic? If art is about expression, isn't eroticism a kind of expression as well?

Actually, I was looking at some nude art earlier this year, before the long slump that got the better of me for over half the year. I'd compared concept of western nude art and the japanese nude art, and realised that a lot of what is considered nude art are usually studio shots or outdoor shots, where the model is no longer a subject, but an object. I didn't really follow up on why that's the case though, but I recalled that the other photographer who tried to do something different (there's this jap photographer, that I can't recall the name at the moment, who will take nude pictures of a girl before he fornicate with) were often branded as porno shooter and works not seen as art.

Still don't get your point. Are you saying that you wanted to change to take a less "safe" approach in photography?

Like-minded? Err... vini, vindi, vinci? I came, I saw, I conquer huh?
I thought most of us have moved off from that stage liao?

If you're interested, we could fix one location, and do a full-day recce, observing different aspects and previsualising of stuff, before finding another day to do an actual proper shooting...
