My birthday is 2nd December 1968 - so that's how old i am!

A very valid point of view to art as well. Frankly, I still trying to strive for that see and appreciate things, without analysis. To most it's as easy as the act of breathing. To me, it's simply too incomprehensible. People are different, I guess...

Like duh! Hello! As if you need to second-guess what Singapore is about?

There was a thesis by one of the History A/Prof saying that the ideology behind PAPa is pragmatism. It was an interesting read, and quite true to government now, as to then.
And as much as the idealist hated the utilitarian way, it is THE way in the reality call Singapore.

Do I hear a protest somewhere? Well, you have the right to protest of course, provided you follow the legal procedure... ...

Aiyah - HOW to protest? Walau - cut cardboard to protest also cannot - and definitely cannot do demo - even if I walk around with a placard stating I LOVE SINGAPORE or better still I LOVE *** (A)

No, I'm not an agnostic. I'm a true atheist who doesn't believe in anything supernatural, be it God, ghost or "divine energy". Maybe I was an agnostic before I step into uni, but I'm a true atheist right now. And frankly it's not easy to be an atheist, for every action ain't judged by anyone but yourself. That's why I believe in moral police see! Haa~!
(Moral police argument somewhere in the last 10 pages...)

    Hmm - so u r your own moral police? Wow - that's a tough job - to morally police yourself ... I don't think I am capable of that yet ... actually - I don't think I WANT TO

Hmm... so what are you "this life" then. Whatever that means...
My 'this life' - POST Christian-fundie - I am not exactly a free-thinker or atheist - actually I am not even agnostic - what do u call a person who likes to take the best of EVERY religion and follow bits and pieces - a syncretist?? I like Sufism a lot - and I like to meditate on Rumi's poems - and I love the singing and the chanting, I also like Buddhist philosophy and I admire the aesthetics of Zen, I like the rituals of Roman Catholicism, I like the stories and symbolisms of the Bible - the Bible itself is one beautiful metaphor, I follow many aspects of Taoism, (the body/health/balance etc etc), I want to worship Saraswati - the Hindu Goddess of Literature and the Arts and I want to read again and again the Bhagavad Gita and Advaita Vedanta, I like the earthy and nature-respecting values and beliefs of the ancient First Nations (the indigenous peoples of North America) ... Ok I can go on and on -

and ONE LAST THING - NO MORE RELIGION ON THIS THREAD - or else everyone liak bo kiu - but if u don't mind - i would like to continue discussing religion with you! You see - it's very hard for me to find people in Singapore who are serious and OBJECTIVE in discussing religion - they are either bo chap / very anti / or very fervent - so HOW TO HAVE A DISCUSSION?? That's why I miss my prof a lot! But my hubby discusses religion and philosophy with me all the time - and he's also dying to hear OBJECTIVE / RATIONAL /NON-EMOTIONAL viewpoints.

For eg - ok - i promise this is the LAST QUESTION ON RELIGION - for me - I think what's written in the Bible - esp the OT - they are all metaphors - so my hubby and I are wondering - what exactly is the metaphor of the Garden of Eden?

Anyway, your statement didn't really mean to say "NO MEANING IN ANY ACTION", but "NO PURPOSE IN ANY ACTION". I like to divide MEANING and PURPOSE into two different terms, where meaning is what come from within, while purpose is what is given. A lot of time people feel that there's no purpose in doing a lot of things, for it may goes against the social norm, or it's just simply absurd. For example, in the Myth of Sissyphus, there's this guy who roll a back-breaking round-shaped boulder up a pointy hill everyday, only to find that the boulder will roll off the other side when it reaches the apex. Still, he relentlessly continue to do so. To us, it's simply an act without purpose, for the boulder will still roll down no matter how hard he try. But to him, there's a meaning in the act. The meaning to deplete all his effort to strive and accomplish an almost impossible task.

Seriously, too many people are purpose-oriented, so much so that they only feel that only things that have a purpose are meaningful. But is there a purpose in most things we do everyday? Do you do photography for a purpose, or do you do so with a certain meaning to you?

I don't do photography - I am not a photographer - I don't EVEN have a 'proper' camera!! And I don't know where my digital cam is - the one my brothers bought me about 5 years ago! I teach Art History! And I pose nude. And yes - all of us are hypocrites in some degree or others - how can we not be? Esp if we have to co-exist with other humans - it's extremely hard to be 100 % truthful and non-hypocritical. Anyways - do u mean to say that most (note - not ALL) purpose-driven people are hypocritical? Coz they think they have a purpose in whatever they are doing but actually they are quite bo liao? Yes - for example Art Critics (or 'Art Historian' to put it euphemistically) - are quite bo liao sometimes coz they only know how to 'critique' - don't know how to go and 'cho tai zi' - only know KLKK (I prefer the more vulgar Hokkien version - LPPL - haha!! but that is only applicable to guys!) management and NATO.
And u know in Singapore - it's too tempting to be hypocritical coz at the end of the day I don't want to be arrested for KPKB too loudly - but then again - I am a small fry - no - I am an ant - in the political heirarchy - (WHAT THE FUHELL AM I TALKING ABOUT - I AM NO WHERE NEAR ANY POLITICAL HEIRARCHY - wa lau! - Heck - I haven't even VOTED at all - coz my constituencies - all kena WALK OVER) - so I point fingers here and there - and write in non-political forums ... see - so bloody hypocritical right??

Anyway, you're not old at all. Most of the ideas would only jump out into reality at that age anyway. In fact, I remember this guy in CS who told me that a real good piece of art would usually be produced when one enter the 4 decade mark.

You'll never know man. No one have expected the riot in France to still be on today either. Like one of the christian song goes... "It only takes a spark, to get a fire going"

Don't look at moral police thing so critically. Remember, in moral policing, there's no punitive measure, for it's plain illogicity. So, there's just guilt and guilt. Moral police means nothing; the threshold of your guilt does.

We do have a muslim around who could tell you about Sunni Islam in Singapore...
I personally like to discuss about Islam as well, but am helpless with Sufism. Again, it's the kind of thing that are probably too personal, and could only be understood by me in the intellectual sense. But all those things about reality behind the veil, and doing devrishes to unveil the reality, just dwell on illogicity in my books.

Anyway, along with the increasing number of agnostics in the world (either those like Choy kind, or those who have remove themselves from association with religious institutions), there is an increasing number of people who believes that all god is one god. The teachings of each religion are simply just plastic factors that changes with time, tradition, culture and locality. There's a term to people who believe thus, but it just slip my mind at this moment.

To me, this is fine to. Just draw a line where Ayn Rand is concerned...

Wah! Invitation to get my balls banged? Don't want...
I don't think the rest minded the discussion here lor. There's not much life here anyway!

Anyway, see how lah! The point of view from Choy is very interesting as well. And wait till babygerald finish his exam. He can hold up to philosophical thoughts quite a bit too. Well, at least he put up with my explanation to existentialism! Hahah~!

And I'm still waiting for the appearance of vamptress as well. Ask her to reply so many times liao, and she still diam diam...

    Question directed at me huh?
Come on lah. I don't break down bible, as if it's some literature and start dissecting through the words. Need to remind people this sometimes, that I'm ultimately still a science student!

It's probably better to ask people who were originally insitutionalized christians about what they think about this.

I think choy is getting all excited, right about now.

Art History? That's so cool. Which period do you specialises in?
I know just a little bit about art, from whatever I could learn from my brother, who's an art teacher. Quite a number of art buff here as well! You know, sometimes it only takes one to willingly talk about something, to spur others who have the interest to keep on talking about it.

As for photography, I guess there's nothing wrong with people who don't do photography participating in a photography forum. Heck! I came to the forum here before I even know what a shutter is!! And that was like, erhm, a year ago! Ultimately, it's all about interest, and the purpose of your participation or lack thereof. No shame either to do or not do photography here!

Yeah! Don't need to explain my hypothesis liao. You know all about everyone being a hypocrite alright. Just try not to say it in anyone's face. You know, be hypocritical about being hypocritical!

And it's so nice to see someone breaking all the self-censorship rules and talk about religion and politics, in a supposedly religion- and politics-free forum. Let's try not to touch on the ethnic issue here okay?

So pissed off with the blerdy local "professional" bank. They'd a computer system to check if there's any amount in my bank account everyday, to debit it into the outstanding payment that was due; even after I'd made arrangement with the department to make the payment next week. I mean, what would you feel if the money in your bank account start disappearing without anyone notifying you? It's not a big amount here of course, but can you still trust a bank that pull this kind of trick on you?

Heck! Anyone know where I can get a general purpose loan, to pay off this blerdy loan I owe? It's totally stupid for me to do that, but I'll do anything so that I won't have to be associated with this bank anymore!

And if you are interested, I could still tell you guys a lot of inefficiency I'd suffered under this bank. Actually, I'm kinda lucky that my main account is not with this stoopid bank!
