It's extremely impressive on paper.
Couple of salient points (which interests me) that I have gathered from the available info out there (Dpreview and RG): 1. Weather sealed 2. Much larger than normal viewfinder for a 1.5x crop camera (excellent - fixes one of the biggest problems with 1.5x cameras that most manufacturers choose to drag their feet on - apparently even more comfortable than the D2x's) 3. Very fast USB 2.0 port (tethered shooting plus? We'll have to see.) 4. Fairly long life shutter - will likely do 2-3x tested life as is quite usual 5. Nice LCD Last of all, an absolute bargain for the specs. I am optimistic that they won't cripple it by lowering the quality of the RAW files via overcompression like they did with the D70s. This is meant to be a semi-pro model like the F100 was. It's good to see Nikon making such a mighty and laudable effort at striking back at Canon. More competition = better cameras at lower prices. This camera looks like quite the winner already. I await with bated breath for what Canon will release in retaliation. Last edited by kahheng; 1st November 2005 at 05:02 PM. |

I was looking at getting a Canon 5D within the next six months to supplement my 1Ds. If the D200 actually turns out to be as good in reality as it looks on paper, it might just tempt me to go back to shooting with Nikons. I think I can live very well with a D200 body and a 17-55DX lens. The speed of the USB port as tested by DPreview interests me tremendously for tethered shooting. Unfortunately, my first and last Nikon pro digital body was such a thoroughly underwhelming experience that's it turned me off the brand for quite a while when considering digital SLR bodies. Which is such a pity because after Olympus, Nikon is probably the only other good SLR manufacturer of digi-centric lenses. (I suspect Canon's next 'revolution' would be lenses better suitable for digital sensors. To me, it's their current 'handicap', though not enough people seem to care ;-)) The only thing I don't like on the spec sheets for the D200 is that the super high speed flash sync'ing with non Nikon strobes is no more. You can't have everything I guess. Last edited by kahheng; 1st November 2005 at 05:34 PM. |

Coupled with a vertical grip, the d200 will be a mean machine.

Best of both worlds. ![]()
Canon can afford to be slow with their lens update for the time being...pple always go gaga over full frame, but this cannot hold out for too long if other manufacturers keep improving. |

Just to ask, is the D200 eyepoint a high eyepoint viewfinder?

finally announced
good to see good products coming out helps with the faster introduction of better products to the consumers. The lens looks very interesting and could become a hot favourite if the image quality proves to be decent. The lens incorporates VRII: The VR II feature enables significantly sharper handheld images at slower shutter speeds and in a wider range of lighting conditions than previous models. Equipped with the new lens, users can take pictures at shutter speeds up to four times slower than is possible with a non-VR lens. It has silent focussing as well (probably more similar to the AF-S 55-200, rather than the pro-level AF-S 70-200VR): Incorporates a compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for quiet focusing Last edited by mpenza; 1st November 2005 at 06:55 PM. |
