i suggest you spec the reuseable parts first (don't need to change every year)

    1. Monitor - buy the best you can afford - use for many years
    2. HDD - just add more next year
    3. Casing - buy a big one for expansion
    4. RAM - just add more next year
    5. Processor - Buy what you can afford and use for 2-3 years
    6. Video Card - buy a fast 2D video card, 3D speed is not important to you.
    7. DVD Burner
    8. Keyboard/mouse

    7. DVD Burner
    8. Keyboard/mouse
    add on... hehehe

    1. Monitor... get the biggest you can afford with DVI!, Apple Cinema display comes into mind...
    2. HDD, try to get 2x Sata (server class) if you can't afford SCSI, 1 for OS, 1 for Scratch, 1 more watever u wan is for saving pictures.
    3. Casing... get anything u wan, u wan cool, can get coolermaster or lianli kind.. hehe... or thermaltake...
    4. Ram, 2gig minimum..
    5. Processor, get 64bit Intel or AMD, next phase is coming, anyway still can use with XP pro.
    6. VC, buy ATI!!! i only love ATI, ok... Matrox if u can afford... the high end i mean...
    7. DVD burner... now quite stagnant, DL, Ram etc...
    8. Keyboard & Mouse is very important... get the best you can get... logitech or microsoft... buy matching color also... and add another Tablet... Intuos anybody?

wonder y ppl always says tis... hehe... but to me, i always buy the 'best' motherboard, end up i never upgrade, instead usually, i change MB & CPU together... anyway get MB with enough slots for your cards (Run SLI), and if possible RAID onboard, so get about 4-8 SATA onboard, 4 IDE, 4 raid IDE, song man....

i mean that the number of ram slots, card slots and CPU upgrades
so don't need to change MB all the time, can use for 2-3 years

Uncle... tomolo go buy lor... without original software, confirm can... original win xp pro about 300 liao... u think lor...

Video card get X800 series enuff liao, hehe... anyway, since doing 2D, all the same, even 9600 or 9800 also can liao... those are cheap... range 200-500

MB i only get ASUS, so up 2 u... get entry level 64bit, about 600 for MB & CPU, fan bundle with CPU free...

    ram, about 500-600 for 2gig i think... normal... DDR2

HDD depends on MB... minimum can put 4x, sacrifice CD rom...

anyway, just bring 2k there, put on the table, tell him i only got tis much, see what he can do lor...

    catchlights,
2k can buy pretty good system if u DIY from Sim Lim.
    what u need is to state the followings;
    1. LCD or CRT monitor(some prefer CRT for PS, some prefer LCD cos good for ur eyes).
    2. Monitor size. Typical 17-19"LCD or 19-21'CRT is good enough.
    3. HDD size.
    4. AMD or Intel. (some are Diehard AMD fans, just like Canon & Nikon. Each has their own good)

#1 to 3 are long term investment. Can keep for very long.

Only Motherboard, CPU & RAM need to upgrade every 1-2 yr.
