Day 1: Thursday 22nd September 2016
Time TBA: Depart Beijing aboard Air Koryo flight JS152 to Pyongyang. We recommend arriving 2 hours prior to departure to ensure plenty of time for customs and immigration formalities. Your JTS Tour Leader will be on hand at the Air Koryo check in desk to ensure everything runs smoothly. Time TBA: Arrival at Pyongyang Sunan International Airport. Welcome to the DPRK! After clearing customs and immigration, you will be met by your KITC guides and driven to the city centre where you will stop by at the Arch of Triumph and have a brief chance to stretch your legs. It’s then time to check in at your accommodation, where a welcome dinner will be served.
Day 2: Friday 23rd September 2016
Today will be a day of Pyongyang sightseeing, starting with some of the most famous landmarks; the Mansudae Fountain Park and Grand Monument and Tower of the Juche Idea. Lunch will be taken at a local restaurant, followed by a tour of the impressive Fatherland Liberation War Museum, incorporating the captured spy ship USS Pueblo. There will also be time for a brief walk around Kim Il Sung Square, the famous location of the DPRK’s huge military parades. In the late afternoon, you will transfer from Pyongyang to Wonsan by Air Koryo ‘air taxi’ service, reducing the journey time to Wonsan Airport to a mere 30 minutes and allowing you to sample Air Koryo’s in-flight hospitality once again! Upon arrival in Wonsan, you will transfer to your accommodation where you’ll be staying over the next four nights, and dinner will also be served here.
Day 3: Saturday 24th September 2016
1st Day, Wonsan International Air Festival
An exciting moment for everyone as we kick off the Festival with a full day of thrilling aerobatic displays at Kalma Airport. The skies above will be filled with a mix of civilian airliners from Air Koryo and military aircraft from the Korean People’s Army Air Force. At least 15 different types of aircraft will take to the skies to entertain the crowds. Lunch will be taken at the airport and there will be a wide range of additional snacks and beverages available to purchase throughout the day. We are particularly delighted to announce that the Air Festival will also coincide with the DPRK’s first ever beer festival, being held next to the runway. You will be able to sample a wide range of beers from across the country whilst being simultaneously thrilled by the aerobatic feats being performed above! Dinner will be served at the end of the flying displays, after which you can enjoy some local art performances before retiring to your accommodation for the evening
Day 4: Sunday 25th September 2016
2nd Day, Wonsan International Air Festival
We return to Kalma Airport for a packed day of pleasure flights. Festival participants will take their pre-booked optional pleasure flights on the entire range of Air Koryo aircraft, whilst non-flyers will have free reign to film and photograph all aircraft movements from the runway’s edge. Furthermore, the day will be punctuated with two exciting demonstration displays, courtesy of the Pyongyang Air Club. Firstly, a parachute display in a variety of formations. There is also the possibility, the first time ever in the DPRK, for foreign parachutists to join them in an International Friendship Skydive. Later in the afternoon, they will also perform a model aircraft aerobatic display, with a colourful array of skills. After dinner, everyone will assemble to enjoy a song and dance spectacular performed by the acclaimed Kangwon Province Art Troupe, before retiring for the evening to your accommodation.
Day 5: Monday 26th September 2016
3rd Day, Wonsan International Air Festival
A change of scene today as we make our way to Songdowon Beach for the final round of festivities. This will be a fun-filled day of local cultural activities and performances, including folk dances, a taekwando martial arts demonstration, kite flying, Korean wrestling, tug of war and the like. Don’t forget to bring your swimming trunks and take a dip in the East Korean Sea! Floating majestically above us will be an array of tethered hot air balloons, flown by international teams from across the world. We are hopeful that festival participants will have a chance to take to the skies as well, providing great views along the coast and some fresh sea air. Completing the aeronautical theme will be a DPRK aviation souvenir stand, where a full range of commemorative items will be available for sale. After dinner, the grand finale of the Festival will take place at Haean Square in the centre of Wonsan, along the seafront. There will be a Mass Dance performed by the youths and students of the city, and those brave enough may join in and have a go! The square will be framed with a mass hot air balloon nightglow, lighting up the city skyline from above. The evening will end with a stunning fireworks display across Wonsan Bay.
Day 6: Tuesday 27th September 2016
This morning, you will transfer to Wonsan Airport where its time to head North for a day trip to the exquisite Mount Paektu, a sacred site for all Koreans and the highest mountain on the Korean peninsula. Upon climbing to its peak (or taking the handy funicular) you will be able to have a great view of Lake Chonji, across to the Chinese border. A picnic lunch will be taken nearby before calling in at the impressive Samji Grand Monument, after which it will be time to return to the airport for the flight back to Pyongyang. It’s then time to check in at your hotel, where dinner is also served. In the evening, you have the choice of relaxing at the hotel or heading off to Kaeson Youth Funfair, where you can try out some of the terrifying rides and mingle with locals!
Day 7: Wednesday 28th September 2016
Head North on a journey to Mount Myohyang (2.5 hours’ drive). The first stop will be the historic Pohyon Temple, a preserved and partially restored Buddhist shrine in a beautiful mountainous setting. The group will then check in at the luxurious Hyangsan Hotel, with a chance to freshen up and have a barbecue lunch on the hotel’s terrace, weather permitting. The rest of the afternoon can be spent relaxing at the hotel or alternatively make your way into the mountains for a pleasant scenic hike along the Manpok valley alongside waterfalls, taking in the beautiful vistas. Dinner this evening is at the hotel.
Day 8: Thursday 29th September 2016
The morning begins with a visit to the intriguing International Friendship Exhibition, a vast underground structure housing all the gifts bequeathed to Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il from foreign dignitaries and nations. A fully guided tour will be offered and it finishes on a great viewing terrace with wonderful views. After lunch at the hotel, we will return to Pyongyang and there will be a chance to enjoy a ride upon the Pyongyang Metro, an important public transport artery and decorated in fine style with mosaics, marble and chandeliers reminiscent of the Moscow metro. You may even be lucky enough to try out one of the new DPRK-manufactured metro trains! We then move on to the Mansudae Artists Studio, where the country’s finest artists practice their trade. There will be a chance to purchase a range of high quality artwork, should you wish. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant, after which you will return to the hotel for an evening of relaxation and perhaps a beer or two at the bar.
Day 9: Friday 30th September 2016
We leave in the morning for Kaesong and the DMZ, where you can see at first hand the physical division of Korea and the immense historical legacy this has had on the nation. You will be shown around the De-Militarised Zone by officers in the Korean People’s Army who will talk to you firsthand about the situation on the ground. Lunch will be taken at a local hostelry where you will enjoy a hearty ‘Royal Court’ style meal in the customary manner, served from bronze bowls. The next stop is the Koryo Museum, consisting of preserved Confucian buildings and a replica mausoleum depicting life in Korea during the Koryo dynasty. It’s then time for the return journey to Pyongyang, and en route there will be a brief stop of the Monument to the 3 Charters of National Reunification. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.
