Default Weird problem of compatibility between F90X n SB26

hi ,

Just wonder if any of you guys are using or have used F90X together with SB26 flash before. I have this two setting and got a funny weird problem. The problem is such that when I connect both together , at times the SB26 flash will just shoot off by itself. Sometiems just once ,sometimes continuously quite a few times. This problem had exist for quite a couple of years.
Only in recent months when i sent my camera for servicing, I sent in the flash as well. Can't rem what the problem they told me, but they mentioned I have to change the hotshoe of the camera or something. I tried a similar SB26 flash of a friend and it does not haf such problem. Tried my flash on his camera and no problem. Tried other model like SB22 also okie. Weird and puzzle!!

Just wondering if anyone encounter the same problem as I do. Please advice if you came across.

Thanks.

Oh ... god ...... ......i tot i want to change it to SB28 to avoid the problem. But the funny thing is that my friend's SB 26 does not haf thsi prob on my cam. funny.

Nope didnt send as i could still use the sb25.

I had thought this was a problem with only the earlier batches of SB28.

zhapchit ,

btw, i can't rem whats the difference between SB 26 and SB 25 ? Is it the additional D function of something. Only know physically that there is an extra pin in SB26.

BTW, you got any idea how much a 2nd hand SB25 will be selling?

only read about the SB28's random firing problem but that's the initial batches... something to do with the threshold voltage set too low.

never send for checking, still working ok now. I'm using a f100 now, don't expecience it anymore because probably I'm using nimh... but with nimh, it's got it's own set of quirks too. When fully charged batteries are placed in the flash, the flash will auto off by itself after a while. I need to to a few discharge before the flash will stabalize.

when I was using my f90, my other friend with a f90x also reported the same auto flash problem. It only occurs when I put in fresh alkali batteries... after a few discharges, it will also stabalized

hmm .... but for my cam, it seems even if i put in fresh battery or not fresh battery also trigger off for a few flashes ........ sometime it will not trigger when mounted, but later after a few shot, it will suddenly flash off, sometime continously few flashes within 1 or 2 sec. after that stablize.

weird isn it .

Now i know why I may be having problems.
I just borrowed a SB-26 to try it out on my D70 but after hours of trying to get it to work without a manual found this thread. I guess that I may have an old hot shoe too. Conclusion being I shall not buy this flash , thanks

This was a common problem with the SB28.

I have had the same experience with my F90x and SB26 too, but only one of them (I have three units). The problem is with the hotshoe, there is an extra pin that locks the flash to the camera. Sometimes the pin gets stuck and doesn't lock down into the hole on the camera's hotshoe (due to a weak spring or misalignment when mounting the flash). This could also be caused by the shoe being worn at the plastic rails. The flash flexes causing the shoe to break electrical contact with the camera thus causing the problem.

I solved the issue by making sure that I hear the click when I attach the flash and that the flash's hotshoe is appropriately tightened. The problem is also solved by replacing the plastic flash hotshoe.

The SB26 is a great flash - don't pass it up because of this.

I used to have F90x but still own the SB26. Never encounter any of these problem. Used it on my F4 and F5s no problem, even on D70, D200 and D2x. Just need to adjust everything manually when using DSLR, it's ok have to do that even on my Metz flashguns anyway.

You just have to make sure that you remove the flash carefully whenever put it in the bag. I will try to leave the flash on till the shoot is over (less wear and tear).

always play safe. turn off both camera and flash before attaching or removing them. even if you change batteries on your flash, turn off both camera and flash unit.

i use the F90X with SB22, SB24, 25, SB26 and recently with SB800 and never saw this problem before.

the diff between SB25 and SB26 is the latter is equipped with remote sensor that let you use the SB26 as a wireless remote slave with triggering set to normal or delayed mode. for full ttl multiple flash set up, you will need the connecting cables (SC-29 or something like that).

Or an SU-4 for wireless TTL.
