    Default Kodachrome Slides

I cant get much info when i searched the CS. Curious to know how different is this type of slides compared to other kodak slides eg the elite chrome & ektachrome? Is this slide the best of the Kodak lot? Heard that it needs a differnt development chemical formula called K-14. Is it? Anywhere I can get hold of this film in SG?

Gee, I haven't shot Kodachrome for years (probably 15?). If memory serves, it can't be processed in Singapore. I think the closest place to have it processed was in Australia. Many photofinshers used to send it out (through Kodak) for you. Not too certain what the situation is now. You had best ask before buying a roll.

    OOPS!

    Kodachrome is now processable independently.... Times have changed. Check out;

It can processed independently? I read from a website "The K processes are for Kodak Kodachrome only and are proprietary, meaning if you buy kodachrome and shoot it, the film has to go to Kodak for processing." I think K-14 chemicals cannot be bought. I went to the link you showed, they didnt teach developing times.

Kodachrome and users of kodachrome, how much you liked about kodachrome compared to other E6 slides? Shed some light for young photographers like me. Very keen to learn these old films. They just seem to me like some kind of historial mounument. Just like the Technical Pan... it was already discountinued when i just started out into photography...

What does process independently means? Not anywhere did it state that Kodachrome can be processed with anything other than K-14 chemistry and K-14 could only be processed by the labs indicated in the packaging when you buy the film. As far as I know, there is not a single lab in Singapore that does K-14. My Kodachrome films are all sent to either Australia or Japan.

    Sorry to create confusion

It used to be that Kodak and kodak alone could do Kodachrome Processing. If memory serves, it is unlike any other process around. The pdf I read "implies" that a specialised pro lab "might" be able to do the process. Not a home lab or hobbist by any means.

Anyway, I did ask at FotoHub when I was last there and they haven't sent Kodachrome out for the longest time. So, unless Cathay Photo does indeed still sell the stuff, our days of Kodachrome seem to be over

As for advantages of Kodachrome (which are now pretty academic I guess) they were excellent durability under dark storage, more "natural" colour than the other chromes of the day (this was years ago, current slides are, depending on your taste, every bit as good) & wonderful grain structure. While i haven't any side by side tests, the grain of KR might still be better...

Perhaps the guys following this thread ought to know and consider the colour balance of Kodachrome. In the days when it was current, the consumers and industry were emphasizing accurate colour reproduction. Currently, the popular slide films have "enhanced" colour response (more vivid or saturated colour). Side by side, the older film might look a little "dull" by today's standards.

    Just my 2 cents.

Best 35mm colour slide film ever especially Kodachrome 25 and 64 (at least to me) but have not seen it around for ages.
Not sure about situation now but don't think you can processed it here.
It used to be done in Australia. The K14 process is very complicated and colour is introduced only during the processing stage. Sure brings back memories.

I have not taken Kodakchrome for more than 10 years. The process involves applying the primary colours one layer at a time during processing. So the saturation was quite unbeatable. I don't think any home lab or even minilab can do this.

There used to 2 labs in the region that developed Kodakchrome: Japan and Australia. The price of the film used to include the processing. You only had to mail the roll (which came in a little yellow envelop) and they will process and mail it back, all nicely mounted.

Sorry, I have not taken slides for many years so I don't know where to have them process now. You can always ask the shop where you buy the Kodakchrome from.

The Pros used to take Kodakchrome Pro 25 and 64. Then there were the commercial version for folks like me...

I went to asked Cathy, Ruby, Ron's and Adelphi colour centre. They all dont carry. Seems that this film is no longer available in SG. That is sad...
Kodachome emulsion is ard for 70 yrs, it must have felt great to see colour that time when everybody is still mainly B&W.

Now there's a cruel blow! There I was last night, all these thoughts of getting a couple of rolls of Kodachrome for old time's sake, dusting off the old Oly, now all in vain....

Ah well, back to the digicam and XP2...

Then again, if there are enough people interested, perhaps some kind soul who know enough about these things might start a MO.

BTW, how many people here remember the Paul Simon song?

Information about KODACHROME 25, 64, and 200 Professional Films

    B&H still selling these films

Kodak PKR 135-36 Kodachrome 64 Professional Color Slide is US$11.49

Kodak PK-36 Prepaid Processing Mailer for 35mm 36 Exposures Slide Film - For Ektachrome and Kodachrome is US$8.99

That means you buy the films from US, shoot here, and send back to US for processing, I remember Kodak ever have KODACHROME 120, think is discontinue also.

In the first place, K-14 processing it did not even exist in Singapore as it was not enviromentally friendly. Melbourne or Japan would be the closest to process K-14 films.

It's called K-14 for obvious reasons. The process is so complicated, they needed about 14 different individual steps.
    Check this pdf : http://www.kodak.com/global/plugins/...als/z50_03.pdf

Correct me if I am not wrong, K-14 is actually a black and white slide film. Colours are introduce later when processing.

You still can order ask Cathay to order Kodachrome from KODAK SG but minimum quantity of 200 rolls.

If you all check through, this topic has been discuss a couple of times before.

I think you're correct on this (the different dyes also give Kodachrome slides better archival properties). The process is so touchy that different Kodak labs had their own reputation on how well/consistent they could do it. Many people would make sure their slides were developed at a specific lab.

After googling I found the lyrics of the Paul Simon Song. For Kodachrome...

    When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
    It's a wonder
    I can think at all
And though my lack of edu---cation
    Hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

    Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, Oh yeah
    I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away

If you took all the girls I knew
    When I was single
And brought them all together for one night
    I know they'd never match
    my sweet imagination
And everything looks worse in black and white

    Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, Oh yeah
