Default Tamron 90mm Macro,is auto motor supposed to retract lens back?

    hi expert bros...need some advise...
I just got new tamron 90mm macro lens 1:1 for my Nikon FX cam.
This is my first macro lens.
When i attached to my camera with auto focus switched on, the barrel will be extend quite far forward.
so...when I switched off my camera, the barrel still stays the same position, and i could not retract it back unless i switch off the auto focus ring and retract it manually.

Is it supposed to work like that??

yes, when the lens on Auto focus, the gear is engaged, when the lens is switch to manual focusing, the gear is disengaged.

so if you try to force turning the lens focusing ring when the gear is engaged, only one thing will happen.
