Performance wise the camera is very good as one would expect from a professional Nikon body. AF speed with AFS lenses is a bit slower than the F5 however AF tracking is no where near as sophisticated. AF performance with AFn-D type AF Nikkors is more than adequate for most professional situations, thanks to the large AF drive motor. In real terms the AFn-D range of lenses focus at a speed similar to the F90, though hunting can occur from time to time with the F4 body. The F4 isn't as brutal on lenses as the F5 though. The Matrix metering is excellent, though it can be fooled when shooting strongly backlit subjects. TTL metering is excellent with the standard caveat regarding Nikon flash and backlit subjects. One thing I miss about the F4 is it's ability to take AIS lenses and AI and use matrix metering, the F5 doesn't do it at all with MF lenses. The camera is a tad noisy compared to the later models, however shutter damping and internal vibrations are almost nil. It has about the best ergonomics I've encountered in a 35mm body, it's more comfortable than the F3 or F5 on long sessions. Cost wise, expect to pay around $900-1000 USD on eBay for a mint condition late body (S/N 25xxxxx) and from what little I know of Singapore prices around 1600-1880 SGD would be about right.

One more comment about the F4, it is the last pro Nikon AF body that features dials and levels. A familiar user can make almost all changes in settings by feel, unlike most later models where you need to confirm the setting on the top LCD display (most displays in the viewfinder do not show All the camera current settings).
This together with the ergonomics, an F4 and the user can become ONE ![]() Just upgrade the F4 shell with all the F5 features, and I'll grab one immediately!! |
