Do you like my idea of having a new breed of DSLR with interchangeable sensors? Instead of changing lenses, you have a fixed high-res 35mm format lens from 18-85mm f2.8-3.5, but interchangeable :
1. 1.0x full 35mm format 2. 1.3x sensor 3. 1.6x sensor 4. 2.0x sensor 5. 4.0x sensor So, with sensor (1) we get 18-85, and with sensor (5), we get 72-340mm. Just buy the sensor that match your focal length needs. Isn't it lighter to bring different sized sensors instead of a few piece of glasses? (It's rather the same way how we swap processors in our PC system.) |

Err sensors are more fragile. It is also easily damage not to mention dust. Don't forget swapping processors on a pc means taking out most of the other stuff first.

The sensor must be paired with the processing electronics which is tightly optimized for the sensor. Moreover, there is tightly alignment for the sensor as well. Even a 0.1 mm off alignment will result in big focus problem. I believe it is very difficult to make an interchangeable sensor with such a tight tolerance.
