Hi all,
I've been seeing a number of ads by Canon for their dye sub compact photo printers (as well as a number of resale ads here on clubsnap). Any has experiences to share regarding these printers? How's the quality, speed and cost (particularly of the consumables)? Thks & rgds, MW |

I have a CP400.
Print quality, I would say very good. Speed is kinda slow. 4 runs over each photo. (including the protective coat) Cost is fine with me less than 30 cents per print. Last edited by Canew; 22nd October 2005 at 02:28 PM. |

I have the CP510. The speed is fast (by my expectations) for 4R, about 1 minute each. I like the extra protective coat it gives to your photo. Smooth and leaves no fingerprint.

How is the Canon CP710 kinda printer output compare to Photo inkjets ? izzit better or lower quality ? I was tempted to get one at Cathay Photo shop few days ago due to its advertised 30 cents per print.. however, found that although the texture is nice, the colour like abit dull... the sales person says that becoz' the shoot was taken using a 3 Mega pixel P&S cam, so if u take using a higher resolution printer will be better.. how true is this ?
Thankyou |

saw some demo printouts... the quality still not satisfactory as compared to my old Prixa IP3000. Otherwise is a good buy considering 30 cents (or lesser) per print...

The Epson Picturemate sounds like an inkjet printer.
As many of us inkjet users (am using a Canon i850) would know, a) Inkjet prints do not have a protective coating and are susceptible to scratches. b) They can fade if not kept behind glass or in a photo album. c) Usage of original ink & paper (especially if you buy the 4R sized paper) can cost quite a fair bit. Well, I bought the Canon CP710 couple of days ago and have printed a few photos.
The quality is surprisingly good (comparable to my 6-ink Canon i850). The CP710 is quite speedy and what I really like is the protective coating, which makes the shine comparable to lab prints. The only complaint is that the 4R papers are perforated on both ends, and after tearing off the edges, the print's length is a little less than 6". MW |

I understand that estimate is about 30c a 4R, but in terms of cost per pack, how much is it would you know? Also ribbon cost? It's rather amazing how reasonable the 510 model costs. UPDATE: ok I just got this from the Canon.SG site - $32.90 RRP for 4R 108 pieces + ribbon pack. Last edited by kahheng; 11th November 2005 at 01:04 PM. |

I think I will be getting the 510. Been looking at these small print dye-subs for a while. I need one to print small pictures for my scrapbook of past work. Is Canon fierce about conquering the 4R picture size market or what? The 710 looks superb. If I were a family man with a P&S, I'd get this one for everyday use. Sure beats an inkjet 4R anyday in terms of the absolute practical quality of the print. Unlike an inkjet print, you can stick these pictures on your fridge in good light without much fear of environmental factors. If you ask me, this is the real family printer. Most consumers want a simple trouble free print that they don't have to fret over much in terms of care. Last edited by kahheng; 11th November 2005 at 01:17 PM. |

If you don't need to have high thruput, can wait for slightly longer processing time, and no preview on set function...
Go for the lowest model. Cos all the prints quality is the same. Canon photo printers only have the postcard size. Other size all the shop ask me to go back to canon to ask. But so far, too lazy to go down. You have to buy the appropriate tray holders should you want to print other sizes also. |

to get colours closer to the actual image, skip the bundled software. instead, use the print command from the built-in image viewer (XP) or the Microsoft photo-manager software. this way, the file is not processed by Software. to adjust saturation, density or colour, go into the printer setting dialoguebox. there you'll find many sliders to adjust. some experimenting will give you the best printout. Try it - it really works. |
