Default Do you use manual/custom WB?

After the whole ruckus (See below*) at dpreview forums over the e500s auto WB, do u guys use auto WB or use the presets/custom? So far from my experiance auto WB is sometimes abit hit miss(i think it's a prob all other consumer DSLRs face), ussually in shade when there's alot of green. In bright sun and indoors the hit rate seems alot better, but i'm begining to use manual WB if i'm shooting jpg and the lights mixed or has a pretti strong cast just in case the camera gets fooled. Setting to 5300K when in a hurry also gives rather OK results that looks 'real'...

What do u guys use?

*A wedding photog used it as a backup backup to his 20d and complained that it was REAL bad, and included a few samples... turned it was because he kept hitting the 'custom WB' button next to the focus point selection button... but it caused a huge uproar

** Also found that on the E-1, in preview mode u can use the WB of the shot u are reviewing by hitting the WB button.... unfortunately e300 does'nt seem able to do that...

The Auto WB is somewhat sensitive particularly in indoor lighting.

So I typically use custom WB and improvise on the test screen shots.

I find most times Auto WB works well enuf (if it does not, Bibble will fix that). However, for studio shoot, i always switch to Flash WB.

me surely use custom WB when indoors. all outdoor shots r set to 5300/5200/5500 depending on my mood. also RAW is a must cos i can correct any WB problem which may surface w/o me knowing during the shoot.

Hello,

For myself, I partial towards manually dialing in WB presets, the main reason is for a consistent 'colour cast'. This simplifies post processing correction of WB since I shoot mostly in RAW. That doesn't mean that AUTO WB performs badly, but I've gotten used to doing it manually, esp with image review, one can get a close approx by eye.

Cheers,

Usually, I shoot with Manual WB. As chancy mentioned, it's easier to post process later, all with a consistent WB.

Also, sometimes I set the Custom OK button to One-touch WB. I find this very useful, because I can set the best WB as quickly as possible.

I see myself moving from AutoWB to Manual WB. For outdoor I shoot with either Sunny/Cloudy setting. When indoor I used the same trick as ykkok to set the One-touch WB with the Custom OK button.

I still miss the user modes on the 5050, E1 and the new E-500 where custom settings can be stored for different situation for a quick switch.

(The only problem with Manual WB is sometimes you forgot to set it back. Offcourse if shoot in RAW, not a problem then)
