Thread: Shoot small pictures with 350D, will the quality be better?

Question Shoot small pictures with 350D, will the quality be better?

I was aware that large CMOS sensors in EOS 5D has better noise
performance than EOS 350D due to the larger pixel islands of 5D.

Now I am going back home so no electricity no computer nor internet
and intend to shoot a loooooooot of pictures, and 2MP-equivalent
pictures are OK to me How is the performance of 350D when I shoot
small pictures? Will the camera "average" four pixels on the sensor to
make one pixel of 2MP pictures and appear more robust against noise?

Try film, more megapixel than you can count but less the convient of instant preview.....

    My advice: DON'T DO IT.

Get urself another CF card. The whole damn thing dun work this way.

I realised the very hard way when I went to DreamCarsAsia, saw this great RQ, turned to Medium picture mode on my 300D and fired away. The consequence? I ruined every single one of them.

jsbn, how did you ruin it by selecting to Medium? The picture will be there, just that lower resolution. ???

Lower resolution, high ISO (since low light)... These are the 2 ultimate potent mix for disaster.

    Hmmm...
No electricity??? I think the most important thing to get is batteries.

THank you all. I have a couple of batteries, but only one 1GB card. One battery fully charged
    can shoot 500+ pictures.

Try normal large jpeg instead of fine large jpeg. Can save some space and still retain your resolution. You can print without much jpeg compression artifects noticeable. Or downsize later to 2mp, if you like.

I dun understand. This is how i always understand:
Lower Resolution lets say 4MP does not affect a picture quality. What does affect is the shapness, the noise, the exposure etc. Lower MP means that you do not have as much "dots" on the space, so it will only affect your print if you try to print too big and hence the "dots" can be seen... Meaning if i take a 350D and take a photo with ISO800 with 4MP and another pic at 8MP at same ISO800, but if i print the photo 2R, i should not see much diff in quality, but if print 8R there will be sure quality difference, as you are filling so big space with so much less "dots"...
So if you are intending to take photos at 2mp just make sure you do not print to big.
    Perhaps i am wrong?

Hmm... My personal experience with my 300D at Medium settings and high ISO (I'm toking abt 400 and above) is dat the noise becomes very apparent when viewing on screen. There isn't much room to crop (assuming if u're as lousy as me) and to top it all off, there isn't much u can do to the picture in Photoshop (other den contrast and that's it).

Yup. That's my awful experience (unless his plans are zero cropping. Fire and Forget). I ruined every single photo I had. Its better if our friend gets an external storage device (the iPod currently has such a function), or gets an extra memory card with an extra battery.

Yup if one will like to do cropping, then the bigger the MP the better.

But whether one has room to crop and what he wants to crop depends on his composition of the photo, nothing to do with the MP. It does not mean that in the with the excalt composition, 8mp can crop more then 4mp, the amount you can crop is the same, just that after that you can print bigger with the pic taken at 8mp as there is more "dots".

What he is saying is that with more pixels, you can crop more and still maintain a minimum number of pixels for printing.

If you only have just nice 4R printing number of pixels, you won't be able to crop anything and still be able to print at 4R nicely.

Not sure on the 350D, but going by general principles, what happens is the camera will use its inbuilt resizing algorithm and then downsize it. There won't be any averaging of four pixels to form a large pixel. Its similar to if you downsized from 4MP to 2MP using photoshop.

So that means I should always set to the highest resolution in my cam?
