Default Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio)

This large rail (44 - 48 cm) is unmistakable. The Purple Swamphen is mainly dusky black above, with a broad dark blue collar, and dark blue to purple below. As the Purple Swamphen walks, it flicks its tail up and down, revealing its white undertail. The bill is red and robust, and the legs and feet orange-red.

Setup: 600mm+1.4TC on 20D
Settings: 1/60sec, f/9, ISO 200

Purple Swamphens are proficient swimmers, but prefer to wander on the edges of the water, among reeds and on floating vegetation.

That is one pretty bird..

Yes those long legs allow it to walk in deep water.

Shot taken by Meng (shootingnear) using a 500F4.5 1.4TC and Canon 5D FF CMOS.
ISO 800. A strong flash will bring out the colorful splendor

The hen eats weeds.. there is so much food arount it, what a simple life!
If you see carefully the feet end up like a hand with a thumb allowing it to
hold the weed.
