Thanks. The 2nd pict is shot with f22, 65sec. I wanted more light trail so I drag the shutter. Guess it's too long

Thanks for the feedback

Yeah, a tad bright but still good! The small aperture made stars out of the street lamps. Nice.

This is quite a nice shot if not because of the faded light trails. We often made the mistake (including myself occasionally) to set the longest shutter speed possible for enhanced trails but in the end to find doing so will just dilute the trail intensity even more.

In a nutshell, light trail intensity generally depends on two factors. One is the shutter speed and the other is the ambient light (which many overlooked).

Why we saw pictures in the magazines/books on a 1 or 2 minutes or longer shutter speed and yet achieved pleasant intensed light trails is because the photographers were shooting at very low or almost dark ambience/environment.

From your 2nd pic, I believe your ambient light (the road area) is pretty high (you should know better as you were there and am not). So, maybe, at iso 100, the "correct" exposure should be around f22 15sec/30sec.

By you setting the shutter speed at 65 sec, you were in fact over-exposing the road area by 1 to 2 stops and at the same time diluting the intensity of the light trails, which stand out or are best enhanced in typical dark surrounding.

to add...

longer shutter speed does equate to many light trails but
longer shutter speed doesn't necessarily equate to intensed light trails

Thanks for the time and effort for explaining You are right about the correct exposure at 30sec!!

Time to reshoot

If you want to get all light trail in, use a black card. *notice the bus is not moving*
Cover your len and when you get enough light trail, use black card to block the light from coming in.
When the bus started moving, remove the black card and start exposing~

hope this helps~

Cheers~

Wow... That's good for you if you're interested in such shots. I was at the 30th storey and the neighbour was treating me like a thief

Hmm... good idea, but how to judge whether the exposure is enough in this case, since exposure time is probably arbitrary (unless you meticulously time when card is removed). Trail and error?
