Default Canon Lens Hood

I'm looking for the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and EF 50mm /f1.8 II lens hood. Any other dealers or shops where I can get these hood besides CP & AP? I enquired at both and was told out of stock and they not sure when coming in new stock...

I had the hood for my old 18-55 kit lens previously. Don't bother. It's isn't worth the $30 for that tiny strip of plastic that
1. Doesn't protect against flare
2. Is way too shallow to protect the front element (use a UV filter)
3. Doesn't have the inner felt lining like other Canon hoods with prevent reflections
4. It looks like a joke.

Been using that lens for quite sometime, the flare is actually more well control than the 17-40mm(shoot direct into light). If you really wan a hood you can go ahead with it, I find that WA lens hood are juz too big, difficult to bring it out for shoot unless your camera bag is a super big type.

10-22mm is actually using the same model of lens hood with the 17-40mm. Quite expensive cost around $60+ just for the piece of plastic. You can try getting it from TCW.

You try litting a candle and shoot the lit candle in your frame, you will see that theres some flare with the 17-40 but not much on 10-22. Don't have the 17-40mm to compare now coz I sold it.

Don't have CPL, juz the UV on. Didn't notice any vignett even though I'm using a a thick UV filter.

If you really can't decide on getting a hood or not, check out this site, might help you to make your decision.

thx for the webby, jus some quotes from there...

1. "ultra wide angle lenses have very short hoods that offer very little protection."
2. "lens hoods are expensive - and inconvenient. Yes. But your lens was probably much more expensive"
3. "Get in the habit of always using a lens hood!"
4. "Pictures taken with a lens hood installed will generally have richer colors, deeper saturation."

I might get one eventually but it will be difficult to use BOTH the lens hood and filter together? once the hood is put on, it will be difficult to rotate the CPL?

Ok, manage to dig out my samples

The flare is alittle smaller on the 10-22 than 17-40. Is it because the sun look smaller at 10mm thats why the flare is smaller? I guess should be.

4. "Pictures taken with a lens hood installed will generally have richer colors, deeper saturation." <-- I think he is refering to tele lens. The 10-22mm hood is not big enough to make colour richer or deeper saturation.

That hood is real big, a CP won't be difficult to rotate, but from what I heard might have some vignett. Since you have a CP why not enlighted me whether you encounter any vignett?

Y not you shoot more and check out whether the flare is that bad or not before deciding on getting one.

I bought the hood for my 10-22 the day i bought it 2nd hand from a fellow CSer. It does make a diff 'cos not only does it help with flare (causing by strong lights outside of your frame, if you point at the light source, the hood can't save you), it helps to protect the front element somewhat 'cos it's the "first line of defence". Tragic thing is after i bought my 17-40L and got the 1.6x crop hood for it (actually the 24L hood), i've got a spare 17-40/16-35/10-22 hood. =^(

As for vignetting, i tested the 10-22 with and without a normal hoya HMC filter on a tripod against a white wall and with the normal filter there is some vignetting in the corners. Thin filters are ok though.

Yes, i do own the 17-40 but only borrowed the 10-22 from my friend to try. But i did not use the original EW-83-E hood supplied but used EW-83DII instead.
