Well, I have Celestron C5 (1250mm Focal Length) and will be there for the event.
This kind of focal length is considered very long for "normal" photography but is the norm for astronomers as we need it for the high magnification. 420mm may not be enough to bring out the details. but can try take it at high resolution, take hundreds of shots and go home and stack them using Registrax (I played with it once). You will be amazed what registrax can do... Due to home commitments, can only be there after 9pm when Mars is visible but there are quite a few C5 there on that night.. Usually, for astrophotgraphy, imagers use T-adapters for film camera. For DSLR solutions and even compact cameras, they use this : http://www.scopetronix.com/ Look under "imaging". I used to own a digi-T for my old Nikon 4300 but has since sold the entire package away. some of the images I took can be seen here www.pbase.com/airconvent If you can register yourself on singastro, you can go to the album section to see the photos from the last mars watch. my fellow moderator uses a Canon 300D for his images. they're very good. in fact, the favoured camera is the 350D. cheers |

Hmmmmm....I think the first logical step is to go and see how people take first, then do a market survey to see how much it is going to cost me, before I can even think about if I want to go this way or not.
