Yup I used flash, I set it to manual full power and then just check the histogram after my first shoot and pray that the critter didn't get frighten off. But from experience I get pretty close the first time anyways. Try it, once you know what distance and what aperture you need on your flash at full power it will be easy.

540EZ will work fine, you just have to find a happy medium between your aperture (depth of field) and flash output. Try and experiment with something small at home.
