I am torn between a marco lens of 105mm and 150mm. Price is the same, which one should i get? What are the differences between 105 and 150? Which is better for macro?
Please give me your constructive comments, thanks! Me newbie.

    So, got the 5D?

go with the 150 if you are getting at the same price. Is it the Sigma one?

Should be the sigma one he is talking about

If you are taking living creature, a longer lens will be good, but then you will have to know so is the shake. If you are taking still object, then a shorter lens might be better.

almost 95% say 105mm, and you still need to ask.

    150mm over 105mm
    - narrow background coverage, thus less distracting background
    - long focusing distance
    - heavy and more stable but need support like tripod

    105mm over 150mm
    - slightly cheaper
    - lighter and portable, thus flexibility in composition while taking handheld

which one is better ? is all depend on you ...

Can 105 + the right extention tubes give me the same DOF/working distance as 150mm?

Ext tube will get you closer focusing (increased magnification), but will not improve working distance.
TCs 1.4x or 2x will get you better working distance (for the same magnification without TCs).

yes it can, eikin was using my 105 +TC to shoot watercross
can also increase magnification and working distance for macros

Haven't had experience with closeup filters but many would advise against it, saying the quality of the output isn't that good.

I've used the 105mm micro-Nikkor with a teleplus 2X TC and it works great. It doesn't shorten your working distance (in fact, you get 2X working distance IIRC) and you have 2:1 magnification. And losing 2 stops of light. If you're shooting wide open, the results may not be desirable, though. However, you'll probably be stopping down for the required DOF, so not much issue i guess.

Just my 2 cents worth ah...

u did say handhold mah... but the truth is... even 90mm or 100mm handhold macro wide open also very hard... the DOF & focusing distance just slight move also can offset alot...
