Default E300 aperture setting not working

Hi, my bro borrowed my E300 with 14-45mm lens to switzerland. He just called to inform me that the aperture setting can not be adjusted, only show --, for all modes, MASP (shuttle speed ok).
B4 this happen, the camera cannot focus. He took out the lens and reattached and then it worked.
Any one has similar problem? any advise?
thanks.

happens to me often too. I just take off the lens then clean the electronic contacts a bit and put back the lens and switch on the cam..

I think you need to switch off the camera before you remove and put on your lens.
Else, the software cannot recognise the lenses properly. Though I am not sure if this is your problem.

its a good habit / practice to always turn off ur cam before changing lens. & when changing it, turn the lens until u hear the click & dun over do it. if no click is heard or u overdo it, u will get the -- error. cleaning the contacts help too but since the cam is so new, i doubt its the contact dirty, no harm trying thou.

agree this is a common cause of the problem as the ZD are digitally controlled lenses with microchips in them... later short circuit then you know.

another common cause it finger prints and dirt/grim on the contacts as mentioned by others.

no, I have never encountered such problem before, never touch the contacts.

Arrow Most of the time caused by user error...

I realize this isn't the best way to start my first post here, but most of the time I've found this is cased by "user error".

Some people install the lenses onto the camera while holding in the lens release button. The lens can actually be turned beyond the lock point and there's no electrical contact, turning it back a bit without pressing the button locks the lens and engages the contacts. The locking pin HAS to be engaged because it is one of the electrical contacts...if not the lens won't work (you can test this by pushing the release button and then half-pressing the shutter button...the f-stop will be -- and the lens will not focus).

Personally, I NEVER push the release button while installing lenses. Even in removing a lens, I'll only hold down the button long enough while turning to unlock the lens, and then reposition my hand so I have a better grip on the camera body.

Of course with lens adapters with electrical contacts (like the teleconverter & macro converter) you have to make sure BOTH locking pins, the one on the camera body and the one on the adapter are properly engaged.

Just to add, I've never had this problem.

Hi Mikefellh,

Welcome to CS and thanks for your detail explaination.

I did encounter the F-.- problem with my first E-300 at the beginning of the year when i first got my brand new dslr. I can also tell you that my problem is not "user error" but a fault within the E-300. My "problem" was solve when Olympus (Singapore) agreed to replace a new E-300 with my faulty unit.

Btw, my E-300 i'm using now do not have this problem at all.

I see that you are from Toronto, Cananda. Lovely city and hope to see you around here more.
